Decent Carter BBD knockoff, non stepper version
I'll say first that I only just installed it, but it seems to be working fine. This is a "non stepper" model, which is perfect for me as my 1981 CJ7 with the 258 engine has had most of the emissions equipment removed at some point in its life. This says "83-87" but it's a basic Carter BBD knockoff carburetor and works fine with my 81 as I don't need the stepper motor. Out of the box the curb idle seemed to be set pretty well, the idle mix screws came set with 4 turns. I'm sure they'll need to be dialed in, but that's pretty much spec for this application. I didn't open the top of it so I can't be sure the floats are set right, but since the other things seemed right I'm not going to open it and mess with it unless I need to. It came with two gaskets, they were decent quality cardboard, sort of what you'd expect. All in all, it's just what I needed to get my "new" project running so I can get things dialed in. I don't know if it's going to last a long time or not, but for 100 bucks I just wanted something that works for the time being and it does just that.

Great carb
This carb has been the best upgrade I’ve done to my 1985 cj7 jeep 258. Cranks and runs better than it ever has. Thanks.

How can they produce it so inexpensive
I have been dealing with a stumble right off idle and hard cold starts since I got my 1979 Jeep about five years ago . I tried all the little things first like spark plugs and wires and air cleaner, carb cleaners , fuel additives, timing and lots of other things . Had been looking at the “Webber conversion “that is so popular but didn’t want to change up the Jeep that had survived so many years without being Frankensteined , also the Weber price is about 5 times as much . finally saw this carb and the reviews and thought it is inexpensive enough. I really thought it can’t be good for the price . The install was a exact change out except I chose the electric choke model and my Jeep was manual so I knew that I needed an ignition/run hot wire . I was so convinced that this carb could not work for this price that I just ran a temporary wire from the battery on a switch for the choke in case I had to take it back off and throw it away. Well after I got it on the Jeep started right up and did a fast idle after warming up I tapped the gas and the idle kicked down to almost normal but I did adjust it down about 200 rpm more . Got in it and it ran like a fuel injected vehicle. No more pumping the gas when it sits a few days to start it . No more long warm up time . No more stumble off idle . Only complaint is the throttle linkage ball was on the opposite side of the bracket as my original. Had to run to the auto parts store for a Holley ball with a nut and drill out the riveted one on the new carb . I will not dock my rating for this as it does not claim to fit a 1979. Oddly tho only other review that mentioned this also had a 1979. I didn’t notice any better power of fuel mileage but just a lot smoother running.

1981 Jeep CJ5 Match
Perfect fit. Bolted right on and started right up!

Works
Great option for my cj7. Almost set proper out of the box with little adjustment. I knocked one star off as the ball connection for the push up rod for the gas pedal was flipped. I drilled it out and added a bolt in. Not a huge deal for the price savings.

1985 CJ7
Replace original carb. Bolted in exact fit. Idle and choke adjusted and works great.

this worked great
all I had to adjust was the choke

Throttle linkage ball on backwards
Good carb, engine started right up.No more raw fuel pouring into throttle body.

Never ran properly
Over fueled everywhere. Idle screws turned in all the way and still rich idle. When applying throttle the Excelerator pump provides so much fuel that the engine almost stalls, coughs and blows black out the exhaust. Completely useless for my AMC in-line 6 cylinder application.
