"Ames" Military Entrenching Tool - Made in USA

This is exactly the same e tool I had so long ago. No carrier on this one but easily purchased separately. Comes with a subdued black paint which is sturdy enough but I recommended cleaning and lubrication after use. It’s a tri fold shovel and is pretty compact in the folded position. This is achieved by twisting the “collar” and upon expansion twisting it down again so it remains extended. It has a serrated edge which is totally useless as a saw but good for what it’s made for. Cutting roots. The other side is sharper. Not blade like mind you but good enough for soft roots and heads if you need to use it in that capacity. It’s lighter than expected because of the hollow handle and stem. Will take abuse but it’s hollow so act accordingly. It can take a fair amount of abuse. Doesn’t have enough spade area for snow but does quick job with dirt and sand. Going back to the weight, while it is hollow it still has some heft. If you are worried about weight on your pack you might try something lighter but I doubt it will be this sturdy and reliable. Make sure it say Ames stamped on the handle area. This is the real deal but there are fakes. You can look up what the original looks like. Overall a great tool to have not only for camping or in the back of the truck but around the garden, chicken coop or rabbit hutch.

This is the real deal, same one i used when i was in. Have it right in the trunk for getting the car unstuck or a zombie outbreak. Definitely feels like it will hold up great. Does not come with case, but they are easy to get on here and cheap.

Ames mil spec entrenching tool, just like my Vietnam era tool. A great tool for the trunk of your car. So many are cheap useless knock offs. Get a cover in woven ballistic nylon. (My Vietnam era tool lives in a genuine WWII duck cover with leather wear strips. It has a hole at the bottom for the handle to stick out.) These tools a great for camping and backpacking. (Although I use a plastic trowel for backpacking and serious hiking. )Before it was gosh or just plain illegal, used the tool for wood cutting, although a real hatchet is better for that, this tool does it. Since one is always in my car it has helped me out many times, like pounding polling place signs into the ground.
