Excellent in every way
I have the Mr. White's history of the American Freight Car and, like that, this is an exhaustively researched, interesting history of the passenger car, with Mr. White's excellent writing style. It's not just dry statistics and technological information. He explains why changes occurred, why they worked, what failed. He writes so you feel as if you're experiencing the evolution. Excellent in every way.

Good look at railcar evolution
Good assessment of the 19th and 20th century development of passenger railroad cars in the USA. Needs some comparative study with respect to rolling stock in other countries, though.

White's books are the mother-lode of the golden age of railroad equipment. A must have.
John Whites books on railroad equipment set a high standard for information and mechanical details. If you interested in 19th and early 20th steam engines, truss rod passenger and freight cars then "The American Locomotive", "The American Passenger Car Vol. I and II", and "The American Freight Car" are the books to have.

If you enjoy passenger rail design history, this is your book!
This is the quintessential history of, as the title suggests, the American railroad passenger car design evolution. The softcover edition is less desired than the hardcover edition, but much easier on the lap!
