The leather binding and gilt-edged pages make this a beauty, but more than that are the superb traditional ghost and terror stories within. This is a book for discriminating readers only, yet the cost is within anyone's reach. Rather than vulgar stories filled with blood and hysterics, you get just the right touch of classic chill for your autumnal (and wintry) nights. There are 55(!) tales in all. A short sampling of titles includes Edith Wharton's excellent "Kerfol" (set in France, not England!); Saki's "The Open Window," with its humorous but chilling denouement; Marion Crawford's nocturnal "Screaming Skull"; and Stevenson's story of midnight dread, "The Body Snatchers," about an Edinburgh doctor who seeks corpses for laboratory instruction but is not too scrupulous about their provenance. So many great writers lie within: Poe ("William Wilson" and the forbidding "House of Usher"); Kafka, Henry James, Ambrose Bierce, the incomparable Algernon Blackwood, Polidori, W.W. Jacobs, Bram Stoker, Dickens, and M.R. James, just to name a few. If you are a connoisseur, you'll be familiar with some but, even so, they are all gathered here in one volume so that you needn't go searching for scattered remnants of the whole.This book is one of the three greatest volumes of its kind. The other two are Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural (a classic and still in print and available new at Amazon), and Tales of Terror and the Supernatural, edited by Marvin Kaye, available here only through third-party sellers now. I must confess to opening the latter late one cold night, the house still and quiet and approaching the midnight hour, then turning to a story titled "Lazurus," reading the first two pages, and thinking, "No, I'm not ready for this one this late," then closing it with a small shudder before pulling the blankets tightly around me. That's just one reason Marvin Kaye's book is worth the effort to find.

The book arrived as scheduled and well protected by Amazon bubble wrap. I love the selection choice and overall look of the text but upon opening (carefully) I discovered the back cover had separated from the binding, leaving a space between the cover and end papers. I know this can be repaired rather easily but I feel that this is unacceptable in a NEW book.

First I must state that I am not sure that the binding is indeed leather, however notwithstanding it is a nicely present tome. A nice cross-section of horror stories are presented by such authors as: Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Arthur Conan Doyle, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James, Algernon Blackwood, H. P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stephenson, Washington Irving and a few others.This is a book worth obtaining and is acceptable reading for most all ages, although it would behoove a person to have a dictionary at hand. Wikipedia, or some other reference source, would be useful for those who are not familiar with the Miskatonic Valley, Arkhan and Miskatonic University. Interesting book (referring to collection Authors and tales) and can be of educational value.

Amazon delivery guy left my package at another address, but the person was honest enough to bring it to me. I'm disgusted at the incompetence of their drivers lately, they have never followed my delivery instructions EVER!! With that out of the way on to the book! Truly impressed with the craftsmanship of this book. Nice heavy book, leather bound and embossed. Gold gilded edges and satin bookmark ribbon. Something you would normally find only in high dollar books 100 times the price of this one. A lot of good stories in this book, can't wait to read them all!!

Many of the stories are available in other editions but known in as nice edition as this Canterbury edition. Good binding and embossed cover to make this a most desirable horror short story collection. And print size is more normal than some other Canterbury leather books. Highly recommended.

Not all the stories in this book are going to leave you in a state of fear such as you'd expect a 'classic tale of horror' to do. Some are merely suspenseful or mysterious, but that is not to say I didn't find any stories to be genuinely hair-raising. Virtually all of the stories contained are well-regarded works by well-regarded writers. Virtually all of them succeed in creating an atmosphere. How scared you'll be will depend entirely on your own disposition and how receptive you are to language and situations that can at times feel a little dated, and that's no surprise owing to the age of pretty much every tale within. Make no mistake, the stories in here are a choice selection of fiction from the mid-modern era, and you are in for a treat if not already familiar to the material.The makers of this book, Canterbury Press, have done a sterling job not only with selecting the content, but also with its presentation. The cover is a work of art, featuring an embossed graveyard scene, replete with bats, a shining moon, grotesque trees, horrible headstones, and an imposing rendition of the book title in a large dripping font. It all combines to a superb effect, such that I actually like to pick it up before reading, just to look at the cover, as staring at the scene puts me into the mood for reading the content.

Wow I love this book! It's quite simply beautiful and I can't wait to curl up this winter to read it. The cover is gorgeous and the pages are gold edged. It has a sumptuous feel to it. Arrived in no time and I'm still surprised it didn't cost a whole lot more.

There is nothing not to like here. Book arrived on time and in excellent condition. So far as the authors - most of the usual suspects are present along with a few I did not expect. The book is well put together - very good spine. Embossed bits on front and back. Gold edge on pages. A wonderful collection of stories.

An absolutely gorgeous book, and fabulous collection of classic favourites to enjoy again and again. Absolutely thrilled with it, it arrived quickly and the price was fantastic for the superb quality. Highly recommended, and a must-have for any horror fan!

Totally in love with the leather bound covers, very eye catching and spooky. Also obsessed with the little attached book mark ribbon and gold leafed page edges which just seals the deal for the overall quality and feel of this book. The collection of stories is fantastic, everything from old classics to new surprises, short stories, longer reads and everything in between. One of my fave purchases!

The tales deserve 5 stars but as I can't rate the tales and the book edition separately, I give the whole one 1 star.The edition "looks" stunning! but the moment I opened it, the cover got separated from the pages completely.

It's so beautiful! The spine of the book is so pretty and the detail with the rises ridges is perfect. I didn't purchase this to read. I collect 'pretty' or cool looking books, and this is perfect!!
