Zatanna and the House of Secrets

Fun interpretation of old classics
Zatanna and the House of Secrets was a great YA version of classic DC magic characters, while still being entire its own thing. There's lots of spooky fun to be had here, with a young magician Zatanna coming to grips with the fact that her father Zatara may not have been quite honest about her upbringing and heritage. The art by Yoshi Yoshitani really makes this book. It's dynamic and fun, with bright, graphical colors contrasting the general Gothic spookiness. As a writer on Japanese folklore, I appreciated them sneaking in some kappa into a few scenes!Special call-out to letterer Ariana Maher who did a fantastic job with Zatanna's backwards-talking magic spell effects.I had a lot of fun with this book and will be passing it onto my niece next to introduce her to some of my favroite characters.

Check It Out
I'm never sure what to expect with these DC Kids books, but Zatanna and the House of Secrets is a great example of what to do right. It connects plausibly with established continuity while also offering fresh takes on the characters of Zatanna, her mom and dad, Klarion the Witch Boy and Teekl, and the House of Secrets itself. This is definitely worth a read.

Zetanna before she got happy, and how she became happy
I always liked Zetanna, from the Golden Age of Comics. And later visits to the Justice League of America. She wasn't a muscle heavy women can be as tough as men fighter, like Wonder Woman. But was always smiling, and never beat the daylights out of villains, using her tricks and magic to confuse and capture them without hurting them.So now at last we have her origin story. And a good one it is. Though admittedly a short one. I read it in one session.

A fav
I bought this book for my 10 yo daughter. She told me that she loved the characters in this book especially the 'girl' character because of the adventure she went through. My daughter loved the illustration and really related with the character's overall feelings.

Magical
Very cute style. This was actually my first real thing to read about Zatanna. While im sure this is an alteres version or a simplified version, i think it is a great introduction to the character to build interest especially for kids.

Good but not great. Decent art, story OK.
Bought this one after my child enjoyed the 'Diana - Princess of the Amazons' one. Don't think this one is quite as good, but the art is decent. Story lets it down though, according to my resident critic. Still, for the price it's worth it especially if your kid has an interest in comic characters. There isn't much else in the way of age-appropriate comic books out there for primary school age kids, especially girls.

Great comic book for girls or boys
Writing this on behalf of my 7 year daughter, who thoroughly enjoyed this book. She does have super nerd dad who could help with some of the words and characters. For any comic loving parent who wants to share their experiences this is a great starting comic book for any girl or boy.
