A Good Guy in a Bad Trade
In the tradition of "Ocean's Eleven" or Elmore Leonard novels, "Layer Cake's" unamed first person narrator is a criminal the reader quickly admires. He is a good guy in a bad trade, a drug dealer who keeps a low profile, operating in the middle of the narcotics trade, between mafia dons and street pushers. His goal is to make his fortune and retire by age thirty. As his birthday approaches, things get in the way of his plans..."Layer Cake" is an enjoyable read. Those on the left side of the pond will need to plow through Brit slang, but you can still follow the dialogue through context.Add this one to your summer reading list.

Amazing Book!
I very much enjoyed reading Layer Cake. It is a book that talks of a world that most people may not be all that familiar with, and it allows the everyday individual to become apart of the underground economy that thrives off illegal goods and services. I would highly recommend this book for someone to read, but I would also have to say that the sequel Viva La Madness is just as thrilling.

Not as Good as the Movie
Average at best. The movie version is a terrific movie. Connolly uses an excessive amount of cursing in this book. He cannot seem to get through a sentence without using an F-bomb. The plot and storyline are excellent, but the author's style is a drawback. The characterizations in the movie are of a more sophisticated type of criminal than in the book. I would watch the movie rather than read the book and usually I am the other way around. I did see the movie on Netflix before reading the book.

Fantastic Book (& Movie)
I saw the film before I read the book, which prompted me to purchase the book as well. The film stays very true to this book, but the book provided a lot of additional background info which could not be included in the film. It was a great, entertaining read. Highly recommended for anyone who watched the film as well.

Fast paced, entertaining adventure
This book is absolutely brilliant! Absolutely not the genre I’d usually read but I’m so glad I picked it up thanks to a film recommendation (thanks SH) and my stubbornness about not watching films before I’ve read the book. The ridiculously entertaining story of the misadventures of a suave London drug dealer in the late 90s made me laugh out loud on public transport and survive on toast, unwilling to delay finding out what happens next to make anything more substantial.I still can’t figure out why I was rooting for the main character so hard despite JJ Connolly not writing anything that seems intended to make him seem nice or likeable. The twists in the tale are great but there’s no massive build up, they just happen in the moment and there’s no time to dwell on them as the story immediately sweeps you along in the ensuing chaos to the next event.I can see why this was made into a film and have high hopes for it when I watch it in the near future. I’m also awaiting delivery of Viva La Madness, looking forward to picking up with this great cast of characters again.

Fantastic book! Fun and easy to read even for someone who's not 100% perfect in English. Probably the one of the best gangster book I've read so far!

Welcome to the layer cake............
Thoroughly enjoyable. I personally preferred the film to the book (which is rare) but this is still well worth a read. Funny, fast paced and packed full of geezers.Danny Smith
