Terrific from start to finish. All killer, no filler.
The Pretenders' 2020 release "Hate for Sale", in addition to being a great album, is notable in that leader Chrissie Hynde finally decided to record with her touring band. The musicians on this latest release are James Honeyman-Scott (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Pete Farndon (bass guitar, backing vocals), and original member & drummer Martin Chambers. While the 2016 release "Alone" was a really good album, it was also a Chrissie Hynde solo album masquerading as a release by The Pretenders."Hate for Sale" features 10 tracks totalling 30 minutes 26 seconds. The short length actually turns out to be a positive due to the album features no filler at all. All tracks were written by Chrissie Hynde & James Welbourne. Fans will be pleased that the album is a successful return to the classic sound of The Pretenders. There is nice variety with every track being strong in my opinon.Easily one of my favorite music releases of 2020 by a long shot. Highly recommended!

THE CURE FOR COVID!
I compare Chrissie Hynde to a timex watch that takes a licking and keeps on ticking! This CD is fantastic, sounds like old school Pretenders from 40 years ago! At 69 Chrissie is nothing short of amazing still the consummate rock and roll icon I have always idolized. Her solo projects, Alone and Stockholm were fantastic then she reverts back to her early roots with Hate for Sale. Her voice is still so amazing and James, Nick and Martin are such a cohesive unit that mesh with her perfectly! This is a must for any Chrissie/Pretenders fan!

BEST Rock album of 2020!
In my humble opinion, "Hate For Sale" is possibly the best Pretenders album since the 1990s: it is packed with a great variety of tunes from upbeat rockers like the title track and "Turf Accountant Daddy" to more traditional mid-tempo fare like "The Buzz". I honestly have not gotten tired of this record since first playing it! Chrissie Hynde has never sounded better and guitarist James Walbourne is a suitable songwriting partner and player. The Pretenders are really back this time!

Thank you Pretenders!
There will never be another Chrissie Hynde in this lifetime. Like so many of her peers have proven, age doesnot quell the true rock and roll spirit. Great album, reminiscent of early Pretenders, hard edged, sassy, clever, and that's just the lyrics! Listen to Turf Accountant Daddy and tell me Chrissie doesn't sound better nowthan she did on Brass in Pocket in 1979! Not one bad song on here, listen a few times and you will be blown away.

She might look a million or only ten cents.
I sometimes think about what the Pretenders might be like had James Honeyman-Scott not died from cocaine induced heart failure, and had the band decided to not fire Pete Farndon (who died from drowning due to heroin overdose). Would the band have gone on to much bigger critical and financial and artistic success? Since 1983, it's basically been the Chrissie Hynde show, with Martin Chambers coming and going (and back now). Would the band have made the songs that were made without them?2020 marks 40 years since their self-titled, critically acclaimed debut. "Hate for Sale" is not the same band, but it is a facsimile of that 40 year old band. Still rocking and rolling. Not showing signs of wear or tear. In fact, "Hate for Sale" has variety and insightful lyrics, and really should be a five star album, right? Well no, not for me.There's no definitive hit here. There's also no real inventiveness or reinventiveness. This is the Pretenders as garage band. That's fine, but I think I liked "Alone" (2016) slightly better. To tell the truth, the Pretenders were never a favorite of mine, but I grew up with them on the radio and MTV. I've liked them, I own all of their albums, but none of their albums really struck me as 'perfect'. All Pretenders albums seems to contain fillers, and some much more than others. No, the Pretenders have never wowed me from beginning to end with any of their albums, but they have been a sturdy, reliable vehicle over the long haul. There's certainly been some interesting twists and turns along the way in terms of trying different things musically, but in the end, I still feel they are a singles band rather than an albums band. This time out, the singles I would lift from "Hate for Sale" and add to a Pretenders compilation would be: "The Buzz", "Turf Accountant Daddy", "Junkie Walk" and "Crying in Public". Mind you, none of these tracks really do anything to further the Pretenders brand, but after repeatedly listening to this short album all week long, those would be the songs I'd keep. That's not to say that some others here like the title track, "Lightning Man!" and "Did Want to Be This Lonely" aren't worth keeping, but in general, I felt like this album was a lo-fi garage band effort. I'd give the album three and a half stars, which is pretty good, mind you.1979 Pretenders: Four Stars1981 Pretenders II: Four Stars1984 Learning To Crawl: Four Stars1986 Get Close: Three and a Half Stars1990 packed!: Three and a Half Stars1994 Last Of The Independents: Three Stars1999 Viva el Amor!: Three Stars2002 Loose Screw: Two and a Half Stars2008 Break Up The Concrete: Three and a Half Stars2014 Stockholm [Chrissie Hynde solo]: Three and a Half Stars2016 Alone: Three and a Half Stars2020 Hate for Sale: Three and a Half Stars

Sounds like a "missing" third album
This is a bare-bones, post-punk guitar rock album in the vein of the first two Pretenders albums. Skip the first track (the horribly over-compressed "Hate for Sale") and you'll enjoy this short-but-sweet return to form from Chrissie and her (new?) band.I've followed and appreciated all of Chrissie Hynde's Pretenders lineups and releases. Some are stronger than others, but what makes this one stand out is that it sounds a lot like the original band lineup from 40 years ago. The guitar playing is upfront and enjoyable in its punk-rock simplicity, and one of the guitar lines is reminiscent of "Kid" from the first album. Hynde's lyrics are intriguing and her vocals are still strong.True to Pretenders form, there's a little punk, a little minor-chord reggae, a song with a Bo Diddly beat, and a heart-aching ballad or two. A satisfying listening experience for a longtime Pretenders fan.

Ottimo album in vinile
Ottimo album, con diversi brani molto piacevoli. La voce di Chrissie Hynde, come sempre meravigliosa, è praticamente senza tempo. L’incisione in vinile è di ottima qualità. Consigliato sicuramente!

Fazit: Gelungenes Comeback, 5 Sterne
