Great "fake fire" especially at this price point
Elephant in the room: Obviously you can tell it's not real fire if you're paying attention. It's a projection on the fake logs and the back of the unit. It's not gonna fool you into thinking it's real fire when you already know it isn't. But out of the corner of your eye if you didn't know it was an electric fireplace, it would definitely make you look twice. Like "You have a fireplace? But this is an apartment! Ohhh it's electric, ok." That kind of reaction. It does look pretty good for a projection. The heater puts out a nice pleasant amount of heat. Really warms your toes (literally) when you're standing right next to it, but won't set you on fire. The cat likes to sleep in front of it, to give you an idea. It's not a heavy-duty heater, but will take the edge off a chilly room while adding all the ambiance of a fire with none of the fire code violations.I like to match this up with a Bluetooth speaker and a sleep sound app I have, which can play a crackling fire sound. Light a balsam fir incense stick at the same time, and it really sells the wood stove illusion. The light, the heat, the smell, the sound, even knowing it's fake when you've got that whole superfecta of sensory misdirection going on it's pretty convincing. The heat is analog on a dial, so it's not quite clear what temp you're setting it to, you just sort of have to guess and adjust. And it also means the remote can't control the heat, apart from just "on/off". So that part could've been done better.Updated to add thermal image. It throws heat at the floor which gives it a bit of range (about 2m) before it starts to rise. How warm it is depends on how warm it already is. In the image the room temp is 22c but 1m in front of the heater it's 33c.

Excellent space heater
This is an excellent space heater. We have three of them for different rooms. And we just bought one for a family member. The remote control they add just enough heat to warm up a room and not make it too hot. Very well made quality product. Doesn't weigh too much. It's very easy to move around and extremely quiet.

Great Little Heater
The media could not be loaded. This particular model, Duraflame DFI-550-22 Freestanding Infrared Quartz Fireplace Stove with Remote Control 1500W, Black, has been working great, so far. It also has a thermostat and a remote control. It arrived early, which was a nice surprise. Our house is 1500 square feet, but it's a split level. By the way, never buy a split level. Too many problems. Anyway, we're using this heater for the upstairs and we're really enjoying it. So far it's keeping the upstairs very comfortable. Our house has the living room, kitchen and dining room, all joined together in one area. And this heater is keeping the entire area very comfortable.Ours did Not come with the metal legs but the legs it did come with, were really easy to put on.Also, the fan is so quiet. Love it. We don't have to turn up the tv when the fan on this fireplace comes on.Our weather is just starting to get cold, so I'll know more about this heater, the colder it gets. So, in a few weeks, I'll update this review if necessary.Pictures...one photo shows the heater and fan actually on. That's why it's red at the bottom. The video is just of the flames. We really recommend it.

Have reservations about model DFI-550-22
Some Duraflame heaters have more metal parts and look better, some have more plastic and look worse, I knew that going in and made sure to order one that users said was metal. I didn't know the fire/flame features also varied a lot from one model to another, I found that out by comparing this new heater with my old one, which I love. Upon unpacking, I was pleased with the appearance of this one, I think it's pretty cute and doesn't look too plastic-ey. Found the legs in the packaging in the bottom and easily attached them to the bottom of the heater. Plugged it in and turned it on, the flames did not "dance", just stationary. Tried a couple times, no dice. Thought about packing it back up and attempting to return, but that seemed like it would be a huge hassle, and I don't like hassles. So I laid it on it's face on a soft blanket on the couch and removed the many screws on the back of the heater. Found that the rotor that goes around and makes the flames was flopping loose. Found that one end of the metal bar is intended to be just loose, floating, while the other end is intended to be shoved into a small hole in a small rubber cylinder which is meant to grip the metal bar. I did my best to shove the metal bar into the hole in the rubber cylinder, but I found it a little iffy, which is undoubtedly why it wasn't properly in there in the first place, leading to it being non-functional. I've had to open up my old Duraflame heater to replace the bulb when it burned out, and the mechanism in this one just seems not as good. I would not be surprised if, after a while, that bar comes loose from the rubber cylinder again, but I guess I'll just take it apart again if that happens, and maybe use some rubber cement or shoe goo on it if it seems necessary. Still, a lot of hassle to get a new item working, right? So, once the unit was re-assembled and plugged in again, the heater works, blower works, remote control works, and flame finally works. Unfortunately, the flame effect on this heater is not nearly as pretty as in my old one. The fake logs in the old one are a lot, and I mean a LOT more detailed and realistic than in this new one. They are more textured, more realistic colored, and some of the logs stick up in a cute way, whereas the "logs" in this one are pretty flat and lacking in any kind of detail. The old one has a fake brick panel behind the logs which I used to think was kind of tacky, but which I now see optimizes the look of the flame effect. This new heater has a plain black plastic panel which does not enhance the flame effect as much. So if I had a chance to see both in operation together, I would choose my old one every time. But notwithstanding, now that it's working, I'm okay with it, it's a useful and pretty cute heater, and it's all working now. Just wouldn't order this particular model if I had it to do over again.
