Fun read, with a philosphical bent that becomes practical
Fun read, with a philosphical bent that becomes practical. The accompanying video (you can find it on youtube, just search "Micahel Caine - Acting In Film" or see if you can find a dvd copy) got me into this book. The video is extremely helpful, and am happy to report, so is the text. The style is a mix of biography and earned acting insights. This serves the text very well. His anecdotes go beyond illustration of acting technique, but also cover the work ethic and professionalism needed to develop an actual career. The text actually has a philosophical feel to it that becomes practical; as Caine formulates a mindset and a method to develop in the craft of acting,It's also funny and a pleasure to read.10/10.

Great Reference for Avoiding Newbie Pitfalls
Yeah, we have the same name; I just spell it right. I purchased this book in 2011 and have read it four or five times, in part because it has some excellent, film-specific tips -- and I completely disagree with one reviewer here who said he knew everything in the book from being in the corporate world; maybe a book on reading comprehension would better suit that particular commentator. One thing this book isn't about is actually getting that film or television role; it's about how a newbie can avoid some of the pitfalls of their newbie-ness (and some veteran actors might do well to read it as well). It's entertaining, informative, and well-written. (There is an hour long video companion piece to it that really fleshes it out more technically; it's available to watch on Youtube now, although I bought a copy when I bought the book.)

THIS GUY KNOWS WHERE IT'S AT!
I've been studying acting for several years and some of the jargon can get pretty 'high brow' trying to explain themselves. Michael Caine does not do that. He approaches the career of film acting from in the trenches with little diamonds of insight studded throughout. I especially like his advice to a film director when the director asked him to fall into a hole telling him that it was not dangerous. "You do it first," was Michael's reply. Fantastic. Shortly after reading Mr. Caine's book, I did a scene where I had to fall into freezing water after being shot. The director assured me that it was safe and the water held no obstacles. I gave him Michael's reply and after hemming and hawing a few minutes he sent a PA in to assure me that the water was deep enough and had no obstacles. Thank you Michael Caine! If your passion is film acting, you will get a kick out of this read. Salute!

How to behave in movies, and any professional life!
This a book filled with humor, intelligence and subtlety. Some actors are good but not very smart, it happens. Caine is extremely smart and wrote a good book. It goes from the difference between a movie and a play to technical advice to actors on the set and includes how to behave on and off the set. There are a lot of funny stories, but each of them is a lesson, so young actors better read this twice. Non-actors will be delighted by the humanity of the book. There are plenty of books called "how to be successful", usually very pedestrian. If you are tempted to buy one, try "Acting in film" instead; it is full of advice that applies to scientists as well as it does to actors. Indeed I had to laugh several times when I read it: some advices that Caine gives are just the same as what I used to say to young geochemists. For instance: this (acting or being a chemist) is an expensive business: show on time and be reliable.

An Actor's Reading List must-have
Such an excellent read. Michael Caine has the most splendid way of of telling you what to do and what NOT to do when acting in film. He's funny and stern at the same time, and his obvious love of acting is absolutely inspiring. The book has a fabulous collection of photographs, as well.

Must have for any film actor.
After Uta Hagen's "Respect for Acting," this is in my opinion the second most important book for any film actor's library. Be sure to watch Michael Caine's video on YouTube teaching some of the techniques taught in the book. The book is short and sweet, a fun biography that is chock full of some of the best advice ever given for film actors.

Tips from a Master!
Extremely valuable guidance if you want to get some tips from someone with more working knowledge of the business than almost anyone else around. Great advice. It's a slim volume so expensive for what it is, but if you're looking for help you'll find some nuggets of wisdom.

Good advice
Given as a gift to my youngest son who is in his first year at Drama School. He thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it very useful. The advice given had even more resonance as it was written by his all-time favourite, Michael Caine.

Learn from the Master..........
I do some acting and who, apart from the master of screen acting, has written a better book. No-one as far as I can tell. There are lots of lovely little vignettes that you can learn from. What more can you ask for ?

A really pleasant surprise
This is a quick read, but one that looks as pretty much every aspect of the film industry from an actors perspective. It is well worth the price, and time taken to read it - whether you are starting out as an actor, or just love to read around the subject, you'll find this fascinating and informative. Acting tips and techniques, and behind the scenes stories - it's all in here. Definitely recommend reading for aspiring actors.
