This rendang paste is the best i have found. I discovered how much I love Rendang at a Malaysian restaurant which has since closed, and have been chasing the flavor ever since. This is it. This is the flavor.It is spicy, certainly not "Caucasian" spicy which is what you'd find in the store. I love it for that. The most difficult part I think is finding the right coconut milk, because a thicker one is needed and most around me are thinner, so it doesn't thicken up the curry as much. That said, it is great, and I have no notes. I followed the recipe on the packet as close as I could, and doing so made it perfect.I highly recommend this paste. If you've never had Rendang, this is the one to try.Oh, the spoon is good too, I still don't know what its purpose is but... It's a nice spoon.

This curry paste is delicious, but the package is not nearly big enough to fit a chicken inside. Luckily, after carefully de-feathering the chicken, lubing him up, and spending an hour trying to squeeze him into the bag, I remembered the complimentary spoon! Once I had familiarized myself with the spoon's mechanical function, I was able to use it to scoop the contents out of the package and place them, along with the chicken, into a much larger bag for marinating. The spoon was even long enough to reach all the way to the bottom and scrape out every last morsel!The Rendang Chicken is now long gone (fervently devoured weeks ago), but I still have the spoon... I use it every day to stir my pour-over coffee. A+

This is the real deal for a Rendang paste to use if you are not making from scratch. Great depth of flavour. Would buy again.

To cook, put one packet of paste with 1.5kg chicken pieces and 2 potatoes, mix and fry for 5 minutes under medium heat, add in 250ml to 500ml water and simmer under low heat for 15 minutes or until the meat and potatoes are cooked, add in 200ml coconut milk, stir well, bring to a quick boil, and serve. The paste is a deep red brick color that is very aromatic and inviting. When I added the water I elected to add the maximum 500ml water as I thought I would rather be on the safe side when boiling for 15 minutes as I did not want to run out of sauce. It was then that I saw how much oil was in the mix. I will note that I made 4 bone-in, skinless chicken thighs and prior to adding the paste to my pan, I added only 1 tablespoon of oil to ensure the chicken did not stick. As I boiled the chicken for 15 minutes as the manufacturer instructed, I was amazed at how thick the layer of oil was as it sat on the top of the sauce. By the time I added 200ml of coconut milk, I knew I couldn't boil it or the coconut milk would break and add to the oil content. The finished sauce is delicious as it has prominent notes of ginger and curry but it is also on the thin side so you can dip roti into it if you have it. If not, it paired deliciously with rice but just was on the looser side. The one detail that I had not anticipated was how spicy hot it is. I love spicy hot food but sadly, my family are not fans and were unable to eat or enjoy the meal. We ended up ordering pizza for them as I didn't have anything else to cook in time. The ingredients include onion, soya oil, garlic, chili (7%), sugar, salt, curry powder, lemongrass flavour enhancer (monosodium glutamate E621), galangal, turmeric, ginger, curry leaves, thickener (modified corn starch E1414), and turmeric leaf. The manufacturer did note that the product may contain crustacean products. If you have an allergy to any or all of these foods, please be aware. There are 6 servings per packet with each 1 tablespoon serving including 110 Calories, 8g Total Fat, 7g Total Carbohydrate, and 2g Protein. The two 7oz packets included a tall silver spoon that says Nine Chef on the handle. This is a perfect ice tea or drink stirring spoon. It is a Product of Malaysia with a best by date of 19 months from the date that I received it. Overall, it is a tasty instant curry paste but only if you like spicy foods.
