The Claudian Invasion of Britannia...
In AD 43, the new Roman Emperor Claudius directed the conquest of Britannia, previously visited but not conquered by Roman arms. Britannia was at the very edge of the Roman Empire of the day. It was reachable only by a risky seaborne invasion. Author Nic Fields has the intriguing story in this Osprey Campaign Series book. For an event over 2,000 years ago, the author has done his due diligence in the limited source material, including archeological findings in Britain itself. Part of the purpose of the narrative is clearly to knock down some stubborn myths. Also the way, he makes a reasonable case that the invasion was largely intended to provide the new Emperor with military credibility. The text has lots of period and modern illustrations, along with maps and diagrams of the assessed invasion route. Well recommended to students of the period.
