If the steering has gotten very sloppy on your lawn tractor, this might be exactly what you need to bring it back to like-new condition. It might take you an hour or so to remove the old unit and replace it with this one, but the results are well worth the effort! I strongly urge you to buy this as a complete unit. You can buy the box and the steering extension separately, but that requires much more work getting the geared sections synchronized to result in perfectly centered steering. This unit is already synchronnized and is "plug and play".My 20 year old craftsman now runs and steers like new.

Picked up an older Sears riding mower model #917271023 and the old steering gears were badly stripped. This was a perfect replacement at a reasonable price.

Fits Craftsman 15.5 HP 917 series mower from 2004. Four self tapping bolts attach assembly to chassis. Suggest starting and removing bolts BEFORE installation to get the threads set. Otherwise very difficult to install self tapping bolts from underneath mower. Could also use standard bolts with lock nuts. Suggest you remove drag link from pitman arm prior to unbolting old part. Drag ling has nuts behind and in front of pitman arm.There is a plastic coupler that connects the steering shaft to the pitman shaft. On my mower the coupler failed gradually over years allowing slop in the steering system. I bought the entire assembly because I was uncertain how worn the other parts were due to accumulated deterioration in the system. Much more difficult and expensive to tear the steering assembly down, replace the parts individually and reassemble, especially considering that other failures may not be obvious until disassembly.

Was the exact part I needed for an old craftsman mower. Wasn't too bad to install. Just a tip, run the bolts through the base before trying to install. The base isn't threaded but the bolts are self taping. Much easier to do prior to trying to bolt it in place.

Fit my Craftsman tractor perfectly. Completed the whole job in less than an hour. As some one else mentioned, tap the 4 mounting holes prior to installation. Steers like new.

The folks selling this item are not up to speed on the fact that this item is not a complete unit. Meaning, the shaft requires additional parts not shown or offered. Those parts are necessary to joint the shaft in this item to the Steering Wheel. A coupling assyembly is required and not mentioned or illustrated. Suggest informing the buyer of this item that additional parts are required to joint this steering assy. to the steering wheel. One customer resorted to welding an additional piece of rod to this items steering shaft to lengthen the shaft in order to attach the steering wheel of his mower to the shaft. He wrote an article and included a picture of his weld joint he made. The customer is done a disservice by the sellers when the customer is not made aware of such issues.

Should have replaced years ago. I don't know how much turning radius I gained but it is very different. Easy to install, seems to be very well made.
