The best Hindi dictionary for beginners
This dictionary is aimed at non-hindi speakers who are beginning to learn hindi. It explains the devanagari script at the start of the book, and also has some other tidbits about grammar and numbers. There is a hindi-english dictionary and an english-hindi dictionary, in both devanagari and romanised. The words and phrases are basic, and will not be enough for every occassion, but a lot of the basics are here. It will certainly get new language learners on the right track.

Great basic Hindi dictionary
It's a great dictionary for Hindi beginners. It has devanagari script and pronunciation explained in the very first pages of the book. It explains how to join Hindi letters and also gives information on basic Hindi grammar. Hindi numbers from 1-100 are also written down in the beginning of the book (these are actually slightly complicated because they sound rather like different words and it is better to learn them by heart). There are Hindi language learning resources listed in the book as well. The dictionary itself is divided into two parts: Hindi to English (In devanagari as well as roman scripts) and English to Hindi part. It has the very basic words and phrases but is not quite useful for things like newspaper translations. However words in this dictionary is the first step into a wider Hindi knowledge. I highly recommend it.

BEST ALL-ROUND H/E & E/H DICTIONARY
I used this dictionary extensively while travelling in India. The choice of vocabulary and the practicality of the definitions was right on. Best of all was the English/Hindi section as other "English/Hindi" dictionaries are written for Hindi speakers trying to decipher English texts and are of no use at all to an English speaker looking up Hindi words! This little volume is indispensible.
