A unique and superbly produced dark fantasy RPG
Having seen reviews of high praise for this RPG from Free League I ordered it, and having taken time to read the Games Master's Guide and Players Guide I can confirm this is a superb product. Everything written by other Amazon reviewers is right on the money. The rules system is elegant, and often very clever. The history of the Forbidden Lands, known fully to the Games Master but to be revealed only to players in parts through their adventures is deep and convincing as a context for the world. The fantasy world is dark and foreboding, combining many twists and subtleties upon the theme of "kin', or the races of Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, Goblins, Orcs and of course Humans and this gives the game world a truly unique flavour that does not at all feel derivative of common fantasy presentations of these races (Halflings for example are only superficially like the Hobbits of Tolkien and are sufficiently complex in their own way as to be distinctive and intriguing though I'll say no more on that). The physical production of the two core books is superb - they look like they come from this world themselves, and the supporting colour map of the Forbidden Lands is superb also. Whilst strongholds are a feature of many other role playing systems, in Forbidden Lands the rules for strongholds, and the need for players to make searching for, building, and resourcing strongholds, is a superbly well developed and well integrated part of the game system... Your players stronghold is not merely an incidental gift of rank and reputation, but brings with it additional challenges of political and economic intrigue that fully grow and develop the stories players will encounter in the game. At the time of writing all other reviews of this RPG on Amazon UK are five star and glowing. I wholeheartedly agree. This RPG is a very exciting and uniquely flavoured dark fantasy product, and my own aim in writing my review was to offer some additional pointers as to why anyone who loves fantasy RPGs would find this product an excellent addition to their gaming group. Its a work of art.

A high quality game, evocative and lovingly designed…
Forbidden Lands is a well-written and elegant FRPG with a strong open-world concept. What’s more, it’s beautifully presented in two faux leather-bound books, illustrated with evocative pen & ink drawings. There is a distinctly old school feel, with some interesting, original mechanics and sound advice for GMs. Overall it feels comprehensive yet compact, without the sprawling confusion of which some RPGs fall foul.Forbidden Lands has been lovingly realised and definitely has that special something that fires the imagination. It’s well-deserving of the four ENnies it won in 2019; a real gem in a flooded market.

This is how RPGs should be done, and presented
A Box Set, two leather-bound books, a HUGE map, with stickers to make the map customisable. What is not to like?Using a variant of the Year Zero Engine you know you are getting a solid set of rules, fully deserving of the numerous awards the game has won so far.The artwork is very evocative of mid to late 80's "old school" RPGs, and fits perfectly with the theme of the game.Easily worth 5/5 all day long.

A nuanced yet simple rpg system
A refreshing take on RPG fantasy, unlike the Amazon Prime subscription which takes your money for services it does not deliver; there's a a legal term for that...
