London's History From An Architectural Perspective
Best Part of the book: the development of the railroads in London. Also, very fine was the Victorian and Edwardian history section. The writer has firsthand experience with the city of London; on many levels. He shows compassion for the poor; who have been casualties of avarice and business arrangements. On the other hand, I did not like reading this book whatsoever. The writing style was dry and flat. Toward the end of the book; it was somewhat like reading the 'London Phone Book'. For someone who has never traveled or seen London; the myriad names of streets, buildings, and business areas became a jumble of meaningless words. This could have been remedied with the attachment of maps and overlays; showing changes in time that have taken place. The cover of the book is lovely though; with ships going up and down the Thames. However, I would recommend this book to a serious student of Architectural History. In many ways it is a fine book. But, I found myself not wanting to read or to finish it. I forced myself to finish it; hoping it would get better. It did get better, when I completed the reading of it. History and Architecture are wonderful subjects when combined. People who have visited London would probably enjoy this book; better than someone who has never been there.

Comprehensive History of London
This is a well-written history of the city of London. It is not only informative but witty -- so enjoyable to read. I've read most of Simon Jenkins books and this is entertaining but addictive reading. Enjoy!

Great book, but same as another
Great read, but please note that this is the same book as "A short history of London". Different cover and publisher.
