Sturdy and capable - better than expected
This auger is welded in 2 locations from 3 pieces. The auger worked well with my 2 handled drill motor. The auger did not break or bend despite having the drill motor twist out of control. The auger could take all the torque from a corded 1/2 inch drill motor with double reduction gears. It would probably break my wrist before the auger.I was afraid the auger would break at one of the welds when I used it in very hard dry soil with 1 inch rocks. I actually dug a hole without any issues. I started with the drill clutch set at max but the hard soil caused the clutch to engage and stop rotation before making a 2 inch deep hole. I had to override the drill clutch. I kept hitting rocks so I had to back up and redrill at slight angles to loosen those rocks and then use the auger to pull up those rocks. By the time I finished one 20-inch hole the drill motor was very hot but the auger was as good as new.

Great product
I bought this Auger to help break up some of the hard areas of my yard that i cannot get to with the plow. I attach it to my 1/2in cordless drill n drill numerous 4-6in holes to blend in fertilizer, gypsum, sand. Since the Auger is so long I don't have to bend over too much to use it...of course I'm only 5'1 so it works for me. Since our unworked ground is like cement, I also use this to start t-posts pre-drilling a spot where I want to add fencing is a huge work saver. My husband laughed the first time he saw me drilling where he was going to be pounding the t-posts in...he was surprised at how much easier his job was...he had no problem getting the posts in all the way. I'll probably order a couple of more for back ups. Makes planting potted plants easier too. Jisco JL24 Earth Auger, 1-3/4-Inch by 24-Inch Length

It tends to bind up and then slip out of the drill
Works great except that it slips out of the drill every time you hit a difficult spot. I like it other than the inconvenience.Bottom line: it works best in soft, well tilled soil. If your soil doesn't meet that criterion, you might be frustrated.

Why, oh why, did I not buy this sooner?
Easiest way to plant cuttings, small trees or bulbs I have ever found. Last year, I planted over 400 bulbs... the old-fashioned way, one bulb at a time and using a bulb 'digger' ... it took me every spare evening for nearly a week, and I had blisters on one hand. Then I found this wonderful auger. Since I already had a terrific cordless drill, switching out the 'screwdriver' and putting in the auger was painlessly simple.I drilled holes for fence posts (metal) this past week, then put in all the posts and put up an entire section of fence... plus a new arbor... in one afternoon. And then, because I still had some time, I drilled the holes to plant willow cuttings and put in eight willow trees. Altogether, the jobs took me about 4 hrs. I still have about three dozen small fruit trees, shrubs and evergreens that should be arriving in the next couple of weeks... I expect to plant them all in less than a day. No more shoveling big holes for seedlings or small trees, just drill... insert... tamp, and water them in. This saves so much time, I wish I had found one a long time ago.

Fantastic Tool - Huge Time Saver
Wow - I waited way too many years to acquire this auger! We have a very thin layer of topsoil (probably less than 1" on average) on top of hard, red clay. I primarily ordered this for the purpose of installing fertilizer spikes around trees and shrubs. Normally, these spikes would be hammered in. But they just shatter when an attempt is made to hammer into hard red clay. It would be sort of like hammering a stick of butter into a concrete sidewalk. So, this auger works great. I used it with a cordless 1/2" Makita hammer drill. The auger and drill work super well together. I drilled 30 holes in about 5 minutes.

YES IT WILL DIG HOLES FOR FENCE POSTS
I needed to dig 7 holes for 4x4 fence posts so I gave it a try and boy was I pleased. I live in Richmond VA and the ground was way to hard to dig by hand with only a traditional post hole digger. The option was to rent a powered post hole digger at Home D for $80. I love this auger and I'm done. The auger shows no sign of breaking. To go as deep as I did does require a powerful drill. I used a corded 1/2" Craftsman hammer drill. I would never abuse a battery powered drill with the workout this auger will give. I bored 6 or 7 holes in a 10" diameter circle, cleaned out the hole with a post hole digger and then repeated down to 18 to 20 inches. If you need to do more than a dozen posts; go rent a power auger.

EasyPeasy
Worked fine especially in soil which is damp when it is largely in a high desert environment which is mixed with lots of sand. Found that very short bursts on my corded drill and pulling it out in short sections worked easily. It was only when I was determined to "drill down" that I had to be more conservative. If the soil is compact, as it was in areas, it worked like a charm. When the soil was dry and powdery with sand etc. it was not efficient to the depths I needed for putting in Ironite. 1-2" diameter holes, 12-18" deep, spaced 18-24" around the drip line of my tree. If i hit resistance, like a tree root, it was noticeable and I moved by drill over a few inches. Easypeasy. 50+ holes and much easier than a post hole digger. A great bargain.

Dulls Quickly and Bends Easily **UPDATE**
Several reviewers suggestion that the shaft on this auger should be hexagonal in shape is a good one as it does slip in the drill chuck when in use. Otherwise it is a respectable affordable auger for light jobs, but may not be durable enough to drill a lot of holes in hard soil. This is my second purchase of this auger, the first was used to drill a couple dozen holes through 12 inches of southwest hard-pan. I drill 18-20 inch deep holes, filling holes with small gravel to allow water to penetrate. This seems to have had a beneficial affect on my trees. I use an inexpensive Black and Decker 3/8" drill which provides adequate power for this auger. **UPDATE** This bit is not appropriate for hard-pan and bends easily when pressure is applied. It also dulls quickly. Without a hexagonal shaft, the top one inch of the shaft broke off after a couple dozen holes. I drilled a dozen holes in hard-pan and another 36 in hard packed sand before throwing out the ruined bit. Downgraded rating.
