Seven complete operas starring the legendary Giuseppe Di Stefano - great live opera recordings at budget price in one space-saving set! Exciting live recordings taped 1952-1961. During his peak years, Giuseppe Di Stefano (b. 1921) had one of the most sensually beautiful tenor voices ever recorded. He was universally regarded as the leading lyric tenor in the world during the 1950's and he was the tenor most often chosen to appear on stage with Maria Callas. Through the years he made a long series of major recordings, many of them with Callas, but also with other great sopranos of the time, including Renata Tebaldi and Birgit Nilsson. Throughout the major part of his career, Di Stefano was idolized by the public for his beautiful romantic voice, dark good looks, energetic manner, and movie-star lifestyle. His career, though brilliant, was cut a bit short, as his voice seriously deteriorated in quality in his early fifties.

Di Stefano - Content Information
All of these are live recordings so the sound is quite variable. The standard square box contains separate soft plastic sleeves in which the cds are inserted. The advantage is that the cds are well protected (minor risk for scrapes compared to cardboard), but there is no information printed on the sleeve since it is made of plastic. There is some basic information printed on each cd (name, composer, cd #, the act/s and the date of the recording). There is also a small 24pg booklet that introduces the box including some photos as well as content description for each disc (opera, singers, time and location as well as a list of the separate tracks). I have been collecting these boxes for a while and always find it worthwhile as there are gems nicely interspersed in these collections.Bellini:I PuritaniMexico City, 29th May 1952Giuseppe di Stefano (Arturo), Maria Callas (Elvira), Piero Campolonghi (Riccardo), Roberto Silva (Giorgio)Orchestra & Chorus of the Teatro de Bellas Artes, Guido PiccoDonizetti:Lucia di LammermoorBerlin, 29th September 1955Giuseppe di Stefano (Edgardo), Maria Callas (Lucia), Rolando Panerai (Enrico)La Scala Chorus & RAIS Symphony Orchestra, Berlin, Herbert von KarajanGiordano, U:FedoraNaples, 14th December 1961Giuseppe di Stefano (Loris), Renata Tebaldi (Fedora), Mario Sereni (De Siriex), Sofia Mizzetti (Olga)Orchestra & Chorus of the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, Arturo BasileMascagni:Cavalleria RusticanaMilan, 10th May 1955Giuseppe di Stefano (Turiddu), Giulietta Simionato (Santuzza), Giangiacomo Guelfi (Alfio)Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala Milan, Antonino VottoPuccini:TurandotMilan, 7th December 1958Giuseppe di Stefano (Calaf), Birgit Nilsson (Turandot), Rosanna Cartieri (Liu), Giuseppi Modesti (Timur)Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala Milan, Antonino VottoPuccini:ToscaMilan, 12th December 1959Giuseppe di Stefano (Cavaradossi), Renata Tebaldi (Tosca), Tito Gobbi (Scarpia), Nicola Zaccaria (Angelotti)Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala Milan, Gianandrea GavazzeniVerdi:RigolettoMexico City, 17th June 1952Giuseppe di Stefano (Duke), Maria Callas (Gilda), Piero Compolonghi (Rigoletto), Ignacio Ruffino (Sparafucile)Orchestra & Chorus of the Teatro de Bellas Artes, Humberto Mugnai

5-stars without info?
I cannot imagine anyone being able to pick a poor performance for a compilation such as this. Having said that, I can't imagine why anyone would buy opera recordings, especially 'live' opera recordings, that are so lacking in information that one cannot easily find the names of the other cast members, the dates of recording and all the other information so necessary to enjoyment of a group effort such as these are! Having more than a dozen performances featuring this great artist, I am personally only interested in adding to my collection from "live" performances I don't already have... I could not buy this tantalizing set as is...

Cofanetto cd Di Stefano
