Sadly, Telly Savalas' Last Role
I'll be honest: I didn't expect very much from "Backfire" (also known as "Back Fire" and "Backfire!"), but I bought it to see the otherworldly interaction of Kathy Ireland, Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, and Telly Savalas in his final role. The film is dedicated to Savalas who passed away before the film was released. The film has an abysmal introduction and premise: there's a man attempting to join an all-women's fire department and the harassment is unbearable for him. When you see the film, you'll understand immediately why this doesn't work, even as a spoof.Kathy Ireland is (as always) beautiful, and Savalas is evil, but they're all caricatures, not characters. There are lots of bad puns and jokes in the spirit of "Airplane!" but without the underlying nuances to make it work. I felt especially bad for poor Robert Mitchum, a fine actor, here seen as the butt of jokes as the Fire Marshal who's losing his mind. There's an evil politician subplot, lots of exploding toilet humor, dialogue like "The password is: potato!", and an unexpected tale of relatives and backstories converging in an unseemly way at a refinery fire.Oddly enough, the closing credits are the best part of the film (seriously), and contain some actual funny jokes if you're paying attention, while the most amusing gag in the film is a cheap MST3K silhouette routine at about the 49-minute mark.In the end I gave this movie two stars out of respect for Savalas' career: he did a lot of really good work earlier in his life and I hate that his career ended like this, but despite all that, I can't recommend this movie to anyone except Savalas completists.
