Excellent book! Well written. Concise. A different melodramatic point of view.
Excellent! Wholey recommend it. Marshall's mum puts in a perspective that has changed the way I see Eminem. I also wonder if Eminem needs to be so cruel to women. I know he loves his mother from afar, but I wouldn't use any words like that to the women I've left behind.

Interesting book
I enjoyed reading this book! I didn't know all that about Marshall Mathers. It's important to remember there's two sides to every story, and this is his mother's perspective. Regardless of how screwed up Debbie is, it sounds like she loves her son, more than just for selfish reasons. I don't believe that she can help being selfish, she was a product of abuse and probably has borderline PD. With that said, when you get past all her issues, it's clear she loves him. It was very interesting, I finished it in a day.

Interesting read, but frustrating at times...
I have occassionally wondered if Eminem was being a little harsh about his mom, but after reading this book, I totally get it. I kept having to remind myself that this book was her defense of herself, a sanitized version of events, because even what she describes is hardly The Brady Bunch. They did move around a lot, they were on food stamps at various times, and I personally lost count of all the step-dads and boyfriends she talks about. Then there's the fact that she apparently left fairly young children home alone and they burned the house down. I think the most outrageous part was how she "accidentally" sued Eminem for 10 Million Dollars, and seemed genuinely puzzled as to why he was upset by this. It just seemed like she didn't want to take responsibility for anything. If you look back at his music, it seems like the songs about his mom didn't get really angry until The Marshall Mathers LP, after she had sued him. She complains about the notoriety she has recieved from Eminem's music, but she is really not helping her case by writing tell-all books about him, talking to the press and tabloids, and jumping on any talk show or documentary that will have her. It was interesting to read about the Mathers' family background and everything, but take it with a grain of salt and consider the source if you read this.

Poor mom
I'm a huge Eminem fan ever since Slim Shady LP dropped back in '99. I was interested to hear what his mom had to say about all the trash talk from his lyrics, and gain some additional insight into the life of the young, unsigned Marshall.I read the book in one sitting, all I can say is, Debbie, if you're reading this, I'm sorry for the hate and want nothing more than to just give you a hug. If you thought Em's life was bad, his mom puts him to shame with her sad, terrible, tragic story. Violent husbands, endless physical abuse, drunken beatings, gunpoint robberies, and so far none of this involves young Marshall, who amplified the problems and made her a global target of hate amongst fans and followers.Turns out (assuming you believe her), the amount of times she's been intoxicated (on any substance) could be counted one one hand, she's always been a successful self-supportive business owner and owned the home Marshall and Kim lived in together, stating Marshall still hadn't left the nest entirely until he was signed to Interscope at 26. Speaking of Kim, Debbie has a deep hatred for her (you'll see why, dear god) but always loved and supported her son in everything he did, and is neither lawsuit-happy or a practicer of the Munchhausen-by-proxy behavior alluded to in the infamous lyrics. She just had a very troubled first son and a very sickly second (possibly the result of her being pushed down stairs by her drunken third husband seven months into pregnancy, resulting in a premature birth).I love Em, come on, his contributions to the hip-hop genre have elevated and evolved the artful expression of rap to new heights and inspired a legion of followers, but his crucifixion of his mom should have ended at the lyrics, in real life she just wanted to have a conversation with her son, talk to him, laugh and be with him and his family like the times before he was an icon. The money didn't interest her--she just wants to be an object of affection by the son she put so much work into raising and supporting.I really hope those two can make up, perhaps Relapse will address this.As for the writing and content, Debbie's voice comes across as a bit simplistic and at times naive, the edits and additions by her assistant are obvious and distracting, and many of her points are overstated and repeated, but overall it's not deterring, and there's plenty of interesting information to keep fans and the curious turning pages. In the end, I don't think she entirely 'gets' the Slim Shady persona and the 10 million dollar lawsuit (regardless of who's idea it was--she claims her lawyer made the decision to sue without her consent) probably didn't win her any bonus points with Marshall, but she still loves her son and Hailie and deserves to be part of the family after all this time, read this book and you are sure to agree.

A different point of view
Although the book was very poorly written (grammar), I enjoyed the book. I wanted to hear her side of the story as far as Eminem's upbringing. As a mom, so wanted to hear her side and I got it.

Great Book!
I thought this book was great. I am glad I chose to read it from Eminems mother's side because now my eyes are open. I love Eminem, but I now see him as a spoiled mamas boy who used whatever he could to gain fame. But dont get me wrong I still love him and he is the greatest in his genre!!

The world's most perfect, misunderstood mother writes a book
I had no expectations when I purchased this book. I was curious to learn Debbie's side of the story.I never doubted a lot of Eminem's accusations, eloquently depicted in his lyrics, were hyperbole or maybe embellished versions of actual situations. But this woman wrote an entire book to "set the record straight" by venerating herself as a human and a mother. She never did a single thing wrong in her life other than love Marshall too much. Any accusations painting her as anything other than perfect are either outright lies or big misunderstandings. I had no opinion on her either way before I read this book. I grew up listening to Eminem, I saw 8 Mile. I knew how he purportedly felt about her but they're lyrics and movie scenes... So, I went into this simply curious. I could hardly finish it because her self aggrandizing and desperate attempts to seek respect and pity were sickening. With that being said, it was a fairly interesting glimpse into the background of a fascinating and mysterious man.

I think Debbie is a sweet lady who loves her sons
I think Eminem is a gifted, talented musician. A rare talent who is one in a million. He is by no means an angel and has many faults ( as highlighted by his mum in this book) but he is clearly a very sensitive, troubled soul who has found himself in the midst of fame, has been damaged by it but has now pulled through and triumphed. I think Debbie should be proud for not becoming too bitter - frankly, she has had a truly s*** life and has remained positive. I hope her health is ok, although her book was written some time ago. Clearly Marshall has gone on leaps and bounds having become sober. I'm sure she is very proud and rightly so. His track Headlights is a beautiful tearjerker and surely an olive branch . He wants to reconcile so good luck Dennie. Kim has a lot to,answer for but is clearly one of life's losers and damaged a good man who, having matured for a few more years before meting her, and in different circumstances, would have just felt sorry for her and would, not have fallen for her. Eminem is still young and very attractive, so good luck to him finding a soulmate who loves him for himself, as his mum clearly does.

Not a bad read
Not bad , good time killer . Was also interesting to hear her point of view. Definitely keeps the mind intrigued to know more.
