The Beginning of Little Feat
I must admit that when I first heard Little Feat I was a bit confused. Lowell George was a former band member of Frank Zappas backing group The Mothers, and this music is connected to but not necessarily logically an extension of Zappa's creativity or direction musically. But, to follow the progress of Little Feat is to be rewarded each time with better music with each release. Lowell tragically killed himself with drugs and alcohol, but his musical genius and his signature band will live on in history. I grew up in DC where the Feat were a local cult favorite and came to play regularly. I miss the Fat Man in the Bathtub, but I'm delighted I have a lot of great music to listen to. Lowell was a marvelous writer, slide player, and his voice was fantastic! Don't miss this introduction to the mind and music of a great artist and his eclectic band mates.

A forgotten gem (4.5 stars)
Little Feat released their self-titled debut in 1971. With its heavy emphasis on the blues along with splashes of country and spiritual music, the album boasts a different sound than the funky, New Orleans-based sound that they are now identified with. Lowell George's slide guitar and harmonica was more prevalent here and Bill Payne's piano work played a larger role than on their later albums. In a sense, the band was similar to long standing bands like Rush, Judas Priest, and Steely Dan in the fact that their first album sounded quite different from their future releases. However, unlike those bands, Little Feat's debut has become a forgotten gem. Even the band rarely acknowledges this album in their live shows as they only perform "Forty Four Blues" from this release and that's not very often. But don't let that discourage you from checking this out as every track here is very good. Tracks like the melancholy "Truck Stop Girl", the beautiful "Brides of Jesus", and the story songs "Crazy Captain Gumboat Willie" and "Strawberry Flats" are all top notch while the country sounding "I've Been The One", the ballad "Takin' My Time", and the bluesy "Crack In Your Door" are also very good. The version of their classic "Willin'", is very good and very different than the more popular version on Sailin' Shoes as George sings the vocal faster while the arrangement is straight country. Other strong tracks include the rollicking tracks "Hamburger Midnight" and "Snakes on Everything" and the old-time blues of "Forty-Four Blues/How Many More Years." All told, this is easily one of their best albums and I would rank this is as their third best studio album, behind Sailin' Shoes and Dixie Chicken respectively. Highly recommended.

Always fresh blast from the past.
I had this album when it originally came out in vinyl. It was a magic time and this music fit right in. Over the years and several instances of music collections being stolen, I replaced the album. It has been several years since the last incident of loss, but I've only now gotten around to again replacing this album - shame on me. I'm very glad to have it back. There is some classic stuff here that is pure Feat, and other stuff that shows another side. This is a rip-roaring, feel-good, foot-stomping album anyone with a pulse should at least hear.

first step to perfection
the first step on the road to lowell george perfection (dixie chicken, anyone?) this first feat's album was rough and unrefined and just what it took to blow the socks off a little 16 year old boy who grew up on the beatles. the ground work was laid for the classic feat sound- a little country, a little blues and funk with just a taste of zappa weirdness thrown in (lowell was previously in the mother's with bassist roy estrada). these guys were my favorite band through their first 4 or 5 albums and they still sound fine now that i'm old and grizzled at 53. lowell left us much too soon and is sorely missed.

Great Album
I hate being the guy that's leaving all the 5 star reviews for the Little Feat albums (I left a 5 star for Down on the Farm last week, after 25 years of listening to it), but I'm currently listening to this particular album pathologically over and over again, so I have no choice but to answer the (currently) sole 3 star review with the following. The self titled Little Feat album was the one Little Feat album I never owned back in the day, in the early eighties after Lowell George's death when I first got into the band. None of the songs were on the live album, Waiting for Columbus, except Willin', which was also on Sailin' Shoes, so I figured I didn't need another studio version (although now I am looking for any version of the song I can get -- just picked up Heart Like a Wheel because Linda Ronstadt does it on that record...). Also, I think it was out of print, so I would have had to get it on LP, and my record player was out of commission for part of this period -- but I digress. As I said above, I am currently obsessively listening to this album, and I have analyzed what I like about it quite a bit, and it is fresh in my mind. The music on the album is unlike anything Little Feat would ever do again. It is more mainstream rock like ("like" because none of this ever got onto the radio) in that it is less funky (for lack of a better work) than what they would do later, but also more experimental. The band shows a lot of good musicianmanship (if that's a word); everyone plays all out all the time. Bill Payne sticks to piano, and holds down the chord changes (while playing every key on the keyboard -- really reaching for them, but with a lot of taste), while Lowell George plays some extremely far out slide guitar fills throughout (Ry Cooter plays slide on Willin' and Forty-Four Blues -- and it's interesting to compare the styles of two slide guitar collosusses). Later Little Feat had the dueling guitars, so Payne was a bit more restrained, and had a multiple keyboard set-up.The song writing is awsome as well. Stawberry Flats... Willin'... Hamburger Midnight... I've been the One... Truck Stop Girl... These are all very honest songs with interesting lyrics and great vocal performances. Half the songs on the album have been covered by other artists at one time or another. The band was young and full of energy, the music is raw and interesting, and really cutting edge. It is definitely different from what they turned into, but that is not a criticism -- at least not in this case.I think the previous critique gets it wrong in several instances. Little Feat were not a southern rock band, but a California band. I think they had some early success with Dixie Chicken (great album, too), and so people kind of put them into that category, and later on, after Lowell George's death, they kind of marketed themselves as a New Orleans party band, but other than some funky beats (which southern bands do not have a monopoly on) there really wasn't anything linking them to the south in their hay-day. They never played the blues (at least not in the Allman Brothers sense of the word) or tried to get the macho Lynard Skynard guitar thing going, opting for understated interplay between the instruments. The present album has these elements in a more raw form, but it is really fun to hear Lowell George turn up his guitar and rock out over some really cool tunes. Great Album.

First Feat
A really good album with mostly great songs & a couple that are just OK. I personally prefer the later line-up after Estrada left & Barrere, Gradney & Clayton joined. However this is still an excellent album with standout songs such as Snakes All Over Everything, Truck Stop Girl, Willin & Crazy Captain Gunboat Willie. There's more of a Country feel to this 1st release than later records. Also, the production is a bit rough & ready compared to their other albums. If you are new to Little Feat, I suggest something from a later period such as Dixie Chicken as an introduction to the band. Already a Little Feat Fan? Then you'll love this one too.

this was simply put a truly fine piece of music...its a very simple statement, but it does explain the reason for the disc
This Little Feat disc from 1971 is something completely different from the eventual stride of the music that the group ended up playing the songs are those that the musicians loved to play and it is obvious that they do enjoy playing them a great deal. Songs like Willin are done with such gusto that you can almost see them play the songs in your mind. I truly love listening to this disc simply because the band is having so much fun. it is well worth every penny i spent on this disc...Spigomars

Love little feat even in the beginning!
Certainly not the Little Feat we come to love in Dixie Chicken but if you are like me and want to be part of a groups growth then this is by far the best version of this album. I think its great.

Simplemente geniales.

1 Intro2 Queen Of The Silver Dollar Little Feat, Emmylou Harris3 Dixie Chicken Little Feat, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Winchester4 Rhumba Man Jesse Winchester5 Old Folks Boogie6 I Can’t Stand Up Alone Jesse Winchester, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt7 Birdland Weather Report8 Home Bonnie Raitt9 Nothing But A Breeze Jesse Winchester, Emmylou Harris10 Rocket In My Pocket11 My Songbird Emmylou Harris12 Sugar Mama Bonnie Raitt13 Rhumba Man Weather Report14 Teen Town Weather Report15 Rock And Roll Doctor
