and I have to say this is one of the best skimmers I've ever used
I've had this skimmer a little less than a year now, and I have to say this is one of the best skimmers I've ever used. I'm not sure where a couple of the other reviewers are coming from about problems with the water level or noise level, because I've not experienced any of these issues. It took less than a day to break in, and was making lots of great, disgusting dark skimmate by the second day. It is also very quiet, my MP40 power head was louder than this thing. The collection cup was a bit of a pain at first getting on and off, but I'm super limited on space under my tank and it's hard to get in there with both hands to mess with it. Once I had it figured out, it was a breeze. The picture below was taken just days after adding, and it's performed like this since day one. This was by far the best purchase I've made for my tank!

Dead silent!
This is hands down the quietest skimmer I've ever not heard! I first saw these at MACNA and was impressed. I and 2 others in my reef club have purchased them (mine only being 2 months old) and all of us love them. The other review on here complains about how noisy they are and the only conclusions I can come up with are that she either assembled it incorrectly or she is smoking entirely too much crack. Great replacement for my Bubble Magus!

hard to adjust, broke after few months
I purchased this item on Amazon. This is my 3rd protein skimmer for my tank. Previously two were other brands. I was hoping with the high price, it would be a better unit. But that was not the case. It took a lot of effort to get it to work properly. It worked well for a few months and it just stop working. It may be the pump but I wasn't certain. I was not able to contact customer service. I finally decided to take it as a $400 loss and will purchase another brand. I would not recommend this unit.

Below Average Skimmer
Save your money and look for another skimmer. I got rid of the NYOS QUANTUM 120 after only 8 months. The NYOS took about 5 weeks to break in, and after that it never skimmed properly. The water level in the skimmer never rose higher than the water level in my sump (9 inches). On a few occasions the water would rise to the bottom of the collection cup, but then fall again (causing the foam that had collected - and very close to entering the collection cup - to fall back below the neck of the skimmer). The controls are terrible; dialing in the skimmer isn't simple like it is for other skimmers. I had to adjust the controls almost every other day and every time after a water change, every time after powering it off and back on. The collection cup is hard to remove. The power cord doesn't sit flush with the base, causing the skimmer to wobble. I replaced the NYOS with a Deltec SCA 1351 skimmer (same price as the NYOS 120) and the difference is night and day! The Deltec is powerful, it comes assembled, it skimmed in less than 24 hours, and it consistently pulls thick foam without constant adjusting.Pros:Beautiful aesthetics, solid build, silent operationCons:Not powerful, terrible controls, inconsistent skimming, long break in period, power cord design, inconsistent performance, collection cup is hard to remove, skimmer is hard to clean without disassembling.

Quiet, but disappointing build quality
I haven't had this skimmer for very long, so I have no idea how it will perform long-term. I have a small sump, so the compact, internal-pump design is great. It produced some micro-bubbles for a few days, but now seems to be skimming well and it runs quieter than my return pump. The fine-tune controls and quiet operation are an improvement over the Bubble Magus Curve 5 that it replaced. That said, the build design and quality is disappointing considering the price and reputation. While assembling the skimmer, I discovered that the plastic post that is used to mount the "Bubble Plate Twister" to the bubble base plate was not attached to the base plate! Without that attachment, the Twister would just float around inside the neck. I'm not sure if the post was supposed to be glued or just a really snug fit, but it was neither. I ended up super gluing the post to the base, which I assume was supposed to be done at the factory. This part is stressed each time the Twister screw is turned, so I'm disappointed that it's only held on by a bit of glue.

Don't drink the Kool Aid
If you have a reef tank - it would make a nice addition for a 50 gallon tank. Assembly is simple and the ease of removing the bottom is a great bonus. The collection cup requires two hands to twist on. The power cord does not line up with the skimmer base and requires pressure to secure. The product has a thick power cord - not a skinny cord as shown in the product photo. The skimmer is louder than my Vortech MP40QD pump or my Tunze return pump, I would not call this skimmer nearly silent. This model does not have a collection cup drain - which is a huge negative IMO. In addition, this model does not have the clear view reactor. Having owned many skimmers over the years I suggest looking for more bang for the buck. To say that I am disappointed with my on-line purchase is an understatement. An attempt to upgrade to a larger skimmer only 4 days after delivery was denied by the seller.

Poorly made
It feels like very cheap plastic. I received the 120 the other day and was shocked when I opened the box. The silencer (Picture shown) was not attached, the venturi did not fit, and I was not told the 120 does not come with a skimmer cup drain. What genius thought that made any sense? Cheap for a German company product.
