UPDATE on "If only it worked more than 15 minutes!!"
My old Kenwood receiver was showing its age, and after many weeks of evaluating what the best replacement within my budget I made my decision. This receiver has been lauded by a host of professional magazine writers and Amazon reviewers. Alas, mine lasted a total of 15 minutes before breaking down, this breakdown, according to Sony, could not be resolved and would need a repair. Needless to say, I was not happy, particularly with the service from Sony - 'distain' springs to mind. That said, given the number of excellent reviews, I have decided to give the receiver another chance to 'wow' me. In the meantime, I can only offer a single star, given my lack of opportunity to test it with a range of movies. I shall update this review when my replacement duly arrives.I can add that Sony could learn a great deal from Amazon when it comes to customer service, it was chalk and cheese. It's a big well done, and thank you to Amazon (Wendy) for being sympathetic and acting to resolve my issue with alacrity.UPDATE - - - Well the replacement arrived today, along with a Panasonic breadmaker I ordered. Regrettably the better sound came from the breadmaker. I'm possibly being too harsh on the Sony as this one did at least produce sound. However, at least with the breadmaker the functions did what they were supposed to do. I have spent the best part of 3 hours trying to get the receiver to accept the settings I wanted; everything from the initial setup, through to using the remote control. Surely it can't be that difficult to complete a setup and use a remote control I hear you say. Well it is. The initial setup kept changing my speaker setup, then didn't recognise my subwoofer, eventually it decided to accept my setup and after doing nothing to the subwoofer, it decided to accept it. That was only the start of the problems, you would think I could put the rubbish setup aside and see what it could do 'sound wise.' You would be wrong. The remote had a life if its own. Settings were changed randomly, settings for one device were ignored and instead switched to a different device (7 times), before eventually accepting it. Then for no apparent reason it set up a sleep timer to switch it off (I still haven't found where to do that, so it wasn't me). Then, there was the sound fields and optimizer, which, and don't ask me why, but managed to reduce the sound to a whisper. Some of the remote control buttons weren't even mapped to the correct function!! I won't dwell too much on the lack of any presets, all were preset to the same frequency of a non-existent station, a minor point you might think, but added to the other issues... So I set about putting in my own stations, if the presets weren't really presets but spaces for my own presets, it managed to find 3 stations, two with RDS, and some obscure station I had never heard of.I could go on, but I would be ranting (as if I weren't already), but suffice to say I have never been more frustrated with a piece of tech. This feels like playing an alpha version of a computer game (not even a beta). I mean, how can you not map remote control buttons correctly??Anyway, despite feeling really bad contacting Amazon, they have agreed to take this back - for which, thank you.Do not buy this, do not even think of buying this, look at alternatives, look away, nothing good to see here.

10 stars for the sound/2 stars for the user interface and ease of use.
I've had this now about 6 weeks. I upgraded from the Sony 5.1 to this one - so i figured it would work sort of the same. One of the main reasons for upgrading was that this amp had 2 outputs - so i could put one to my 4K tv and one to the HD projector! you would hope! the other reason was that I could get rid of my home HIFI system and use this with airplay and bluetooth to play music from iPhone etc..can i start of by saying the sound on this machine is JUST AMAZING. it totally blows you away - quite literally. i have it set up with 7 speakers and 2 subwoofers. the sofa shakes! it is quite something to hear.Playing music through the system from iPhone via airplay is also breathtaking.what I am really dissapoined in is the her interface and the ease of use.I have a 4K tv and a HD projector - and i just couldn't get it to work at all. you have to set each HDMI output as either 4k or standard - but the mix of different sources - just wooudn't work. i also hates the way the amp literally takes over control of everything, even if it is switched off. So if you have it on output B, the projector and switch if off as you've been watching a movie on the projector - the then switch the TV on, it won't work as you have to switch the amp back on the move it to output A. you would think the through bypass would just work that out - but it doesn't. I really dislike the whole way it works. it isn't simple and just a faff! i've ended up with the old set up - ie a blu ray player hooked up to the amp for the projector and a 4K blue ray player and sky hooked up to the TV.but at least the amp doesn't control the tv and sky - like it did.I love the sound - it's amazing - but it's just a real pain to use.so - leaving it just with the projector and music - it works just grand.disappointed the ease of use and interface wasn't better for £420hence only giving it 3 stars. but like i say - the sound would be 10 stars!!

Awesome sound. Niggles with HDMI ARC on Philips TV
I bought this after reading many glowing reviews and after a months use I'm not disappointed. This AV receiver sounds great with my Kef Eggs, both for music and movie's. In terms of features and input/outputs, I'M ve got no complaints as this receiver can handle it all.I can't comment on Dolby Atmos yet as my speaker setup is only 5.1, but nice to know the upgrade path is there. The only reason it's dropped a star is due to issues with HDMI ARC and CEC with my Philips TV. Using HDMI ARC I was getting all kinds of audio sync issues and the receiver would spontaneously switch off mid TV show..... infuriating! Thankfully this all went away once I switched to Optical for TV audio, so no big deal.I'm not sure if the TV or AV receiver is to blame, but my feeling is poor inter manufacturer compatibility. A bit of googling reveals many people are experiencing issues with HDMI ARC. All non ARC HDMI sources work flawlessly.Overall this receiver does a great job where it matters most - audio quality - and I highly recommend it

Love this receiver
Love this new receiver. This is the third STR-DN i've had (1020 & 1050 being the others) and as you'd expect, the specs keep getting better & better. One thing I do miss is TuneIn radio, though I can cast from my phone. Although the specs don't mention it, there are numerous speaker set ups to choose from (I have a 6.1 set up) & the speaker calibration, using the supplied mic, is a breeze. I did have an issue with the ethernet connection - it knocked my internet & WiFi out when in standby. Following help from Sony, the issue was resolved by resetting the receiver. I'd definitely recommend the STR-DN1080 for it's sound & specs.
