My first book by this author
I enjoyed this book so much. In a way, it reminded me of MacKenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard, one of my favorites, which I consider high praise. Western man, a rancher, a little rough around the ages, and a bit of an outsider, marries a plain, bookish woman from the South.Mary is a librarian who was considered too brainy and too plain to ever receive much attention from young men. She also dressed like an older woman, extremely conservatively. Travis is a little on the rough side, a cattle rancher who has been left to raise two nephews and a very young niece after the death of his brother and sister-in-law in an car accident. He advertises for a wife in desperation. He is afraid he is about to lose custody of his niece and nephews.Mary wants a life and answers the ad, sucked in by the prospect of being a wife and particularly a mother to the three children. Her marriage prospects are nil in her home town. She marries Travis and then the two begin to get to know each other. The road is a little rough, to say the least. I love that Mary was a strong character - at one point, Travis said that he was drawing a line that she could not cross, and Mary said that she was too - right down the middle of the bed. Heh. Travis fell in love with his Mary and she became beautiful to him. I loved how he would listen - after a bit of ranting and raving - and become a reasonable human being. Travis had his priorities right - he put his wife and the children first. This is a beautiful love story.I enjoyed the children. The author got them just right.

Nice, gentle, old-fashioned romance
I suspect this was one of Debbie Macomber’s early books. Oddly old-fashioned story of an “old maid” and a rancher in desperate need of a wife when he becomes responsible for raising his brother’s family after the brother and his wife are killed in a car accident. The rancher is rather stiffly written, and this seems to have been written before the women’s movement.

It's All About Family
For awhile I was afraid I wouldn't get my happy ending, but Debbie Macomber has never let me down. After Travis advertised for a wife in the local paper, he got little meek, mousy Mary. She had no idea what she signed up for but her journey is the most heartwarming part of the story. After they tied the knot, Mary went on to prove herself in many ways. It took time for Travis and Mary to finally see eye-to-eye on family matters. As they nutured the three children that Travis had been chosen to raise, it seemed at times this would end badly But the two strong-willed adults had to work together, which they eventually did. Travis' obsession with finding the person responsible for his brother's and sister-in-law's death took precedence over everything else. The person who was responsible for the hit and run turned out to be quite a surprise. You'll have to read this moving story yourself to find out more and see how Travis and Mary and the three children evolved jnto a besutiful family. A good read...

Really A Good Book
A little bit of romance, mystery, sadness, reality all rapped up in a feel good story.Yes it's not a unique story it's been repeated numerous times... he needs a caregiver for his orphined neice and nephews she needs love...but it was unique in that it is modern day Mail Order Bride story with a slight mystery.Travis was moody and Mary was to nice in my opinion. The children: Jim (12) had way to much attitude he needed more attention or a good counseling session wouldn't have been a bad idea, Beth Ann was way too in tune for her age and at times you wanted to put a sock in her mouth but she was adorable and Scottie was just too grown up for 8. It was an abstract family that somehow worked because of all the issues they each had.I enjoyed Tilly and Logan's character's. He was sooooo in love with her and she was such a lost soul you wanted to get them together soooo bad.The ending was a good one but still not exactly the way I wanted it to end but all in all it worked. Enjoy

Good
This book is written over 25 years ago. You need to read it with that in mind ……An arranged marriage …… a woman looking for family and belonging …… a man [grieving brother] looking to create a stable home for his grieving nephews and niece.Their first impression of each other, neither does he find her beautiful nor does she find him handsome. The story beautifully shows them growing closer and finding the beauty in each other. The children coming to terms with their grief……and all melding together into a loving family unit.

Wonderful story of love
The mail order bride Travis brought to town to help him care for his niece and nephews after his brother and sister-in-law were killed was disappointing. Not what he would want in a wife, not that he wanted a wife. Mary was small and plain, but he needed help and her letters had been so encouraging. He would let her help him but he didn't have to love her. But Mary worked her way under his skin and changed his way of life. She was not afraid to stand up to him and challenge him. Suddenly she was the sweetest, kindest, most beautiful person he had ever met.The side story of Tilly and Logan is an added bonus.Great story. You won't want to put it down.

A good read!
This book is hard to put down. The characters are believably like people who might live next door, or help you find a book at your local branch of the library. Their struggles are compelling, and the mystery compelling.

The Love Of A Good Woman
I’ve read several mail order bride stories before, but nothing contemporary. I was a little disturbed by Travis’s bad temper and childish attitude in several parts of the story, but Mary’s kind and sweet character dealt with it in an admirable way. I question that most women today would put up with Travis’s antics. It showed that the love of a good woman made this relationship successful and brought a family together. Ms Macomber did a great job with the story’s ending, I wasn’t expecting the story to end the way it did. Thanks again, Ms Macomber for several hours of good reading.
