A perfect beginning reader book
When I moved to Canada at the age of 8, I had to learn English with virtually no prior knowledge. While there were a few cute stories that my third grade teacher taught me with, many were rather dull and, as I realized in later years, somewhat nonsensical. How I wish I had books like Douglas Florian’s “Pig Is Big On Books” to make learning English more enjoyable. The vocabulary of Pig Is Big On Books is at the perfect level for beginning readers to tackle on their own, but that doesn't diminish the delightfulness of the story for both child and adult reader alike. The protagonist is an endearing little pig who will encourage kids to love books and whose cleverness and resourcefulness create a fun surprise ending. As if the story wasn’t charming enough, the illustrations are a perfect complement! Don’t be fooled by the fact that they look like they could have been drawn by a child, which makes it appealing to kids; it actually takes decades of honing one’s art skills to be able to create this deceptively simple style (check out Pablo Picasso’s progression of styles to see what I mean). Douglas Florian is equally adept at creating magic with words as he is with paints.I wish my kids were at the age where I can read this charming book with them over and over, but since they’re adults now, I will treasure Pig Is Big On Books on my own, and they can fight over who gets to inherit my copy when I’m gone.

The I Like to Read books are perfect for beginning readers
The I Like to Read books are perfect for beginning readers. Pig loves books but one day he runs out of books to read so he decides to write a book…this book. As a primary teacher I appreciate books written at beginning levels that readers can retell using characters, events, setting (inferred), problem and solution. The illustrations are done in crayon and have the “I can do that!” feeling for young writers. This book is for any PreK-1 classroom library.
