Location, location, location
I suspect whether or not these things work for you is dependent on where you live (and how many mosquitos you're coping with), and on how close the smoke is to you. Here in the northwest, we're on our deck on a June evening, and two cones plus two sticks surrounding our seating area is enough to protect this mosquito magnet and my companions on a fairly calm night. It takes trial and error to figure out the best placement, but we've been using these for several weeks and have not been bitten during that time.I do suggest hunting around to find tealight sized lantern-type holders--Ikea or the dollar store can be a good source for these. The glass surround of the tealight holder helps maximize how long the cones will burn for without obstructing the smoke. And if you're going to be out for longer than an hour, skip the cones and use the sticks from the same company. You CAN put the burning sticks out in dry sand and then relight them the next night; the key is just to keep them dry! But if you're out for a short evening like we often are, the cones are a great way to go.

Works in my Central Texas yard; packaging resists water much better than expected
These cones work very well for the mosquitoes in my area. I've bought the cones three times and sticks once and I find them to be consistent (you don't get many sticks but they do burn a looong time). Different mosquitoes breed in different regions so it might not work well for everyone. It's important to note the wind direction when you place your burner as it won't work very well if the breeze carries the smoke away from you. I like to light one outside a minute before I'm ready to work in the garden so a decent smoke is going before I'm there long. Sometimes I'll take the little burner with me or move it around, but I've never had to burn more than one at a time. The cardboard tube they come in is surprisingly water resistant! Last night in a storm I accidentally left it out in a big tray. When I found it this morning it was on its side half covered in water. It must have been that way for hours and when I twisted open the swollen lid it started to fall apart, BUT the cones were completely dry. Very pleased with this product and will most likely buy again.

Smith & Hawken insect repellents - a supplier
Ever since Smith and Hawken closed down, I've been looking for these things. I was very pleased to find an alternative supplier on Amazon. They aren't particularly elaborate - just incense cones with a dash of citronella, plus other flavours. There are two types - Joss sticks and cones, but they both work on the same principle - they keep the mosquitos at bay by emitting scented smoke. As it happens, I find the cones to be more convenient. I suspect the principle is smokescreen rather than repellent, but that doesn't matter. They work, and they smell quite pleasant: they don't get in the way of enjoying an al fresco meal.If you live near a swamp, er I mean Natural Wetlands, and would like to be able to sit outside in the evening, try these. With any luck, they'll work as well as they do for me.Recommended.

It will keep the vampires away.
I really like these. They work well. The only thing that I dislike about them is that they are really strong smelling and tend to bother my asthma a little if I get right in the path of the thing. I am not entirely wild about the smell. But they do work. I bought some tiny, stone-like plant pots to put decorative sand in, and stick these in, placing them around the perimeter of my deck. Looks nice and depending on how bad the vampires are, and the wind direction, I can just light one or two, or a bunch. Good product.

No mosquitoes, and they smell nice too!
I live in Brooklyn, NY, which means I've got mosquitoes no matter what I do- I can make absolutely sure there is no standing water anywhere, but mosquito-breeding heaven could be just a few lots away. I've tried citronella torches, diffusers, sprays, granules, and sonic repellents, and none of it was tough enough to deter a Brooklyn mosquito. With all the rain we've had this year, I was worried we wouldn't be able to sit in the garden in the evenings, but these Amazon Lights incense cones really do the trick- the bugs actually leave us alone, and they scent our garden with a lovely herbal aroma, not garlic or chemicals. Our friends have been commenting about how nice they smell, not complaining about being bitten. They're all-natural, pleasant, and effective- best anti-mosquito purchase I've ever made! I also bought the sticks, they're long-burning and perfect for a party!

They burn up fast and you need to use several to get good coverage
These are OK. But they do burn up fast and you will need to use several at one time to get good coverage of an area. You do get 50 in the container but will go through them pretty quickly.

They Work!
I purchased these along with the incense sticks you can put in the ground. I’m very happy with this product. I used them for my son’s graduation party because I knew the gnats and mosquitoes would be biting. Sure enough they were. As soon as I lit them up they were very effective. I’m one of those people that bugs like to feed on. One mosquito bite gives me a bad reaction. Using these for an outdoor event is something I would highly recommend. They also smell really good. Many people asked me what they were and my neighbors even ordered them as well. We live near the metro parks so keeping these pests away isn’t an easy task. The fact is THEY WORK!

LIKED!!
I ordered these so I could put them around the patio area. They work great and last about the right amount of time for a meal outside. The only downside to them is that when it is windy, they get blown off of the little holder. I got some other cheap ceramic holders that have higher edges than the one that came with it and the problem is solved. This brand smells way better than the OFF brand.
