First impressions are good, let's see the lifespan...
Initial impressions are one thing, we'll see how longevity is. The write speed is crazy fast! I have all SSDs in my system aside from this (using it as an archival/backup disk 4TB) and it keeps up pretty well. The only thing I found weird was that the disk had a bunch of volumes/partitions on it when I put it in. Windows showed it as 3 drives. I had to do some work to kill / merge all the volumes and get it all set up properly. I worry that's a sign this was a refurbished drive being sold as new.Anyway, we'll see how it holds up, I'll drop another review in a few months.

Very, very noisy!
Arrived in solid, but rigid packing. One small box nested in a bigger one in Matryoshka style. It was clearance between the two, so the small one bounces inside the bigger one like a dried hazelnut in a shell. No bubble wrap, foam or similar padding. The carriers drop or throw this boxes around without mercy. As the drive is heavy and fragile it could be easily damaged. I do not know if that is the case with mine, but the drive seems faulty. Extremely noisy like drives from 20 years ago. Periodically it buzzes like high rpm fan with a lot of vibration. The mounting screws, which I tightened reasonably well were loose after only 8 hours of operation because of the vibration. It is also restless without being solicited, the heads "scratch" all the time. It runs a bit hot for being idle, with the computer case completely open. I have many other drives, including 15 000 rpm SAS drives and 10 000 rpm Raptor drives, none makes this noises. The tests also show the drive had already 33 hours of use, where does it come from? Somebody's RMA? I wonder if it is a real HGST or a knockoff, I am not happy and going to return it.Seller was pretty good replacing it with new one. It is better, but still very noisy, If you like it quiet it will drive you crazy. It constantly scratches and buzzes. I disabled and even uninstalled it through device manager, no difference, it has its own mind. I ended buying a HDD switch to turn it off/on and use it as storage only. It is big and might be reliable, but super annoying.

Excellent product! Fast Shipping! Great Service!
I was in a desperate situation with a server I manage and needed assistance ASAP, or we risked losing critical data. The company saved the day, shipping the disk immediately and providing excellent customer service. Our system is back up and running and we couldn't be happier with this purchase. Thanks!

Signs that it is not brand new
I do no believe I received a new drive. My drive had an existing partition (in my experience, NIB drives come completely unformatted) and CrystalDiskInfo says it has been through 25 power ups and 3 hrs of use. Not astronomical, but having just installed it, I went through about 4 restarts and an hour of use. However short the time, it looks like someone else used it. Not knowing what it was used for, how careful they were, or why they sent it back bugs the hell out of me.

Excellent HGST Ultrastar drive
I work in the data storage industry and have many years of experience shipping servers and storage enclosures with high capacity hard drives so I have good personal knowledge of the failure rates of different drive offerings and what to look for in storage devices. Even though I was purchasing a drive for personal use at home, I knew I wanted an Enterprise-grade drive, knowing that it would be several times less likely to fail than a cheap consumer-grade Seagate or WD external drive and I was willing to pay the smallish premium to get one. I've always had excellent experience with the HGST Ultrastar drives at work and seen them achieve much lower AFR's (Annual Failure Rate) than competing drives (often 0.4-0.5% for HGST vs. 0.5-0.8% for others) so I went the HGST route for my consumer purchase and am confident I won't regret it.

Highly recommended! Perfect from Serverpartdeals
Great drive and crazy throughput for a 7200RPM disk. Honestly, this drive benchmarks better than most SSD's other than Samsung. Not only that but the price is excellent, I bought 5 of them for my NAS and I cannot tell you how pleased I am. These are not refurbished disks, they had 1 power on - that was when I powered it on. Disks are excellent and it's one of the last things HGST made before selling to WD. If you know HGST's products then you know they are the absolute most reliable drive on the market. Since these were made in July 2015 - I cannot say on the warranty but I can say I would order every one of them if I had a place for them. I love these disks and honestly I have been doing this for 20-years. I can assure you quality.

Not Sata
In the name of this drive it says that it is a sata drive but it isn’t. Theses are sas drives and they do not work like normal. I thought my first order was shipped wrong and that they sent me sas instead of sata but the second order was the same thing. If you are looking for a hard drive for your computer do not buy this, it is mislabeled. But if you are setting up a server these are a good price.

Very nice to have a fantastic backup drive for my images.
I got this to add to my first 6TB as a mirrored RAID drive. It came with no documentation, but the internet came to my rescue with just a few pages. I installed it, set it up as a RAID, and moved all of my files and folders back to the new single 6TB drive. I opened LightRoom and it saw all of my images with no difficulties or issues, such as having to find missing folders or images. That was a huge relief! This one is an NAS-style drive, which is supposed to last even longer than my DeskStar 6TB that it is backing up. Both of them had really good reviews online. I bought the first one 6 months before buying this one.

As advertised
I have now used the Hitachi Ultrastar He8 for a couple of month and they have worked flawlessly. I tested them before putting them to use. It came out fine and since being used they have been very stable. It has not been used under extreme conditions, but there seems no indication it could not. I'd buy it again.

Sehr starke Vibrationen

SAS interface drives!! Won't work with computer with SATA interface.
If you are looking for the SATA interface drive. This isn't one for you. It's in fact a SAS drive. Seller has miss labeled the product packaging, product descriptions are also incorrect.Return / refund process took more than a month, very disappointed Amazon. Waste of time.
