Newsletter Ninja: How to Become an Author Mailing List Expert

Labrecque’s dojo will whip your newsletter ninjitsu into shape.
This book’s ideas are so simple to implement if you’re already familiar with setting up a newsletter, even a simple one. I’ve recently moved to a different EMS (read the book to understand) and decided to re-read this book for more insights—and, once again, I wasn’t disappointed.I was originally recommended Labrecque’s books by reading David Gaughran (another helpful writer’s resource). The tips in this book are worth their weight in gold if you implement them. Now that I have these ideas ready to try out, I’ll be reading the sequel to this book, which I bought at the same time I got this one.If your list is stagnant and stale, you’ve got nothing to lose by trying out these strategies and tactics (again, read the book) and more readers—and hopefully more superfans—to gain!

Invaluable for those of us lost on how to do this.
The book is easy to follow. The language is basic. You can follow the steps like workbook. Lots of great ideas for someone like me who knows I need newsletter, but struggles with the details beyond that. I'm off to read book2.

A fantastic foundation
I suspect that I might benefit more from the next book in the series or taking the actual course. That said, it's not because the information presented isn't valuable, timely, or something that any author (traditional or self-published) shouldn't keep in mind to optimize and grow their newsletter. It's just that at a high level, most things in play are established best practices. That said, there are some actionable tips and tricks as well as specifics that really help to reinforce the concepts and provide clarity. And they're delivered in a conversational and approachable tone that I wish more of the nonfiction/how-to books I read adopted. It's like sitting down with a trusted friend to learn about something they know.I don't regret the purchase at all. In fact, on the Kindle "What's Next" screen, I picked up the next book the moment I finished this one. If you're new to newsletters (or have one but don't understand why it isn't working), this book is a great place to start figuring out your foundation and creating a plan that should lead to success. If you're looking to min-max an already-successful newsletter, maybe not so much.

Take the Fear Out of Starting and Maintaining a Newsletter
Newsletter Ninja: How to Become an Author Mailing List Expert by Tammi Labrecque is a short primer on strategies for creating effective newsletters that people actually want to receive, open, read, and interact with. I've been struggling for quite a while with finding the motivation to start an author newsletter, and Labreque helped me identify with where my hesitation stems from. I appreciated her injections of humor as well as the way she pointed out mistakes she'd made herself while offering the information in a clear, concise manner. As she points out several times, this is not a step-by-step instruction manual on setting up the myriad aspects of a newsletter and signup form. It addresses the approach to creating and maintaining an engaging newsletter. I've been living in fear of committing some of the mistakes she highlights in Newsletter Ninja, and that fear has caused me to procrastinate starting a newsletter. As I prepare to create my newsletter and set up sign-ups on my website, blogs, etc. (look for links to sign up in the near future), I think I'll be referring back to this book often in hopes I won't make too many mistakes.

Great resource for learning this topic
Tammie writes in a very informative and conversational style mixed with a bit of humor and a sprinkle of sass. After reading this book I now understand just how much I didn't know about the martial art of newsletters.

good overall
Very helpful in starting a newsletter, building an audience and so forth. The author dangled the carrot too much though. The information that I really wanted, I had to wait for, but overall I recommend

Engaging, funny and informative!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Often, with instructional text, I become easily distracted and only manage to get halfway through or skip steps (skim read). With Newsletter Ninja, I was highly entertained, and Tammi kept me with her throughout.

Wealth of info
Oooh, this book was totally worth the money. I know I'll be rereading it many times. It was full of info that I knew and didn't and I've learned a lot about newsletters since reading this book.
