I have read this book several times and, although it was written in 1970, it is the definitive introduction to the Italian Renaissance. The book covers the period from 1330 up to 1590, approximately. It explains how patronage worked at that time and covers the 70 years up to 1400 which led to the Renaissance. Highly detailed it leaves you feeling like an expert and full of enthusiasm to visit Florence and see all the wonderful works by Donatello, Michelangelo, Giambologna and the rest.
