Oh, what a day of jubilation there was in Liberty Falls when the Federal funds came through for contruction of a handsome new "Liberty Falls Post Office." From the molding at the roof line to the individually placed cobblestones that would surround the edifice, this was to be a post office fit for a major city indeed! Local officials often drove their horse-drawn carts past the site of the post office to watch its construction progress and as every layer of red bricks was added they became prouder and prouder of their latest governmental building. Old-times mused about how Liberty Falls had certainly come a "far way" since the days of the Pony Express; now there was so much mail incoming and outgoing that the new post office would have four full-time employees! And when Mr. Samuel J. Smithers arrived in town to assume the position of Postmaster, he was warmly welcomed indeed. Liberty Falls townsfolk are still talking about the ribbon-cutting ceremony where Mayor Willie Griffin unfurled the American flag over the new post office's door. And to make the celebration all the most special, there was a special concert afterwards at the Bandstand!
