Fell walking in the Lake District...
This Cicerone hiking guide offers 30 walks in the Lake District, England's most popular national park. The selected hikes aim at high ground and/or fells. With a little luck on the famously fickle weather of the region, each hike offers the opportunity to explore some wonderfully scenic high ground. The book has an introduction for those unfamiliar with the region, including its history, wildlife, and especially its weather. Local rules for walking (and parking) are briefly covered. Each hike has its own chapter, with a descriptive narrative, a map, details about difficulty and estimated time and distance, and a few color photographs to whet your appetite. In some cases, the author has suggested variations on well-traveled routes in order to avoid crowds. The hikes are grouped geographically by their general location in a quadrant of the Lake District. Some hikers may wish supplemental map coverage from Ordnance Survey or Harvey Super-walker. Well recommended to the enterprising traveler.

Great book but follow general advice
I love the authors walking guides. She has a really accessible narrative writing style that makes you feel she is walking with you.Anybody who knows the Lake District will be aware it can be a confusing place when relying on a guide book alone - the rapidly changing nature of the area combined with a seemingly endless array of paths and tracks (but often absent where you are trying to locate one...) means that guide books must be used in conjunction with the relevant OS map with at least a basic level of how to find directions by compass. And that's without the legendary and rapid weather changes on the mountainsDay long fell walks are not for novices so be aware of your own capability and limitations.Follow the general advice which is at the beginning of the book and be prepared for all eventualitiesRemember that route description is generally necessarily brief as extra words and pictures means more ink and extra pages therefore higher price of the book. Books are generally pitched to hit a price pointThe author is at pains to stress the importance of map, compass and relevant equipment - so be warned that you may be left scratching your head in the seemingly middle of nowhere trying to locate a track and wondering where you went wrong as the visibility rapidly diminishes around you...(yes, I've made that mistake before)This is an excellent guide to the high peaks and fells from an author who has such an obvious love of the are.One of the best features of this book is the description of the history and points of interest that accompany you on your way - along with outlining the fells and views found at various points en route.A really good guide book to enhance not just walking but also any visit to The Lake Dustrict

Inside cover map for Cotswolds
Location of walks on the inside cover of the book displays an area in the Cotswolds as to where the walks are and not in the Lake District. Need to see at a glance where the walks are in the Lakes. The book is probably priced cheaper because of this, and there may be other issues with the book (I don't intend to read through the full book to find out). Will be returning for a refund and will buy elsewhere.

Good Buy and Informative too
A Fantastic Book. All of the inspiration you need to get out onto the fells. It is good to search and plan ahead online, however this is a nice size book to carry with you inyour backpack and read through whilst actually doing the walk with the instructions.Good Buy if thinking of purchasing.

One of the very best
Vivienne Crow is one of the best writers in her field. Her walk descriptions are always easy to follow and the routes she describes are fabulous. Also the "difficulty" ratings she gives are pretty spot on too. Buy her stuff, she really is the best - something to do with how much time she spends up on the fells I imagine!

High level walks
Pretty thorough book with all main walks covered. Did feel a little dated though. Reasonable price and quick delivery.
