James Bond Volume 1: VARGR (JAMES BOND TP)

Fleming's 007 with a Modern Bite: Mean, Nasty, Beautiful & Brilliant!
Warren Ellis is still one of the most underrated writers in comics history, but his take on Ian Fleming's brutal, sexually-charged Secret Agent is an unparalleled masterwork. 007's nasty roots come to the 21st Century with Ellis's razor-sharp characterization, plotting, and technological bleeding-edge literacy, creating the most faithfully-adapted, yet ingeniously improved take on James Bond in decades. Rivaling the Daniel Craig Film Era for greatness, inventiveness, and style, Ellis's "VARGR" is among the very best of Bond; the distilled 007, with all it's original ugliness and thrill injected into a stark, modern adventure that puts its contemporaries to shame. Essentially Book 1 or 2 in his critically-acclaimed run on the character, be sure to pick up "Eidolon" to complete the story.

Very Enjoyable!!!
Warren Ellis adds to the 007 mythos with a brilliant and fun six-issue story arc. Jason Masters and Guy Majors bring vivid, action packed art to the story. Great, great fun!!!

Definitely NOT Fleming's Bond and Not That Interesting Either
A number of reviews I've seen have been touting this as a return to Ian Fleming's Bond. I'm not sure what book they've read. I've read all of Fleming's books (and Kingsley Amis's excellent follow-up Colonel Sun) and seen all of the films so needless to say Bond is a character I'm rather partial to.The story of Vargr is underwhelming and didn't feel like a Bond story at all. There is no love interest, the villain is underdeveloped, and Bond's mission is confusing but not interesting or complex enough to make you care. It's all so lackluster. I suppose that if Bond matches wits with Blofeld, infiltrates Scaramanga's gang, or tangles with the homicidal Red Grant then a mission like the one in Vargr is what he deals with on a day to day basis. It's tedious, not that interesting, and just kind of there. There's so little to this story it could have easily been condensed into a three-parter. I finished the first issue shocked that the publishers thought there was enough substance in that one issue for the first James Bond comic book in 20 years. As stated, Bond himself is nothing like Fleming's creation nor is he really like any screen Bond I've seen. I've never known Bond to say, "Balls," when he doesn't get his way and he's far too willing to shrug it all off and kill in cold blood. If you read Fleming you'll know that Bond doesn't really like killing and his reluctance to commit murder gets him into trouble. On the plus side, the story does yield some interesting scenes, including a fight scene with a villain who is a bit too reminiscent of Renard from The World is Not Enough, and the art really excels at the action scenes. I especially liked the use of zip-a-tone for shading because it helped give the art an old school, pop quality even if the inks and colors are a little too smooth and polished for Bond's world.Of course this is all just my opinion and I don't regret reading Vargr...it just didn't feel like Bond to me but I hope that Dynamite continues what they're doing with some other writers and artists because the more Bond the better as far as I'm concerned.

Standout Bond Tale
Always heard of bond & played a few video games starring him but never was able to really get into the stories around him. If that's the same with you, this comic definitely will get you into the pathos of 007.

A really good Bond Story
It's a really good bond story, has a lot of the known elements from the film and movies that make you feel like you are arectually reading arectually bond story, as well as, some familiar faces from the MI6 that make the overall cast more interesting. The lack of a Bond girl is disturbing tho. Don't expect this to be a life changing experience for Bond likr Skyfall was, but it's definetely thrilling and sophisticated.

Ellis & Bond.
Wonderful art. Very cinematic. Typical Ellis decompressed storytelling with cutting edge science and some good laughs thrown in amongst the old Ultraviolence. Not his best work but still a cut above most other writers and that art is just beautiful
