Very interesting finale to a well-written series of books
This is the last in a series of police procedurals that take place somewhere in Scandinavia. (Location is not ever made clear in any of the books.) The entire series is well-written with characters that have depth and stories that are interesting. This last one goes back and forth between two time periods and puts closure into the series. I gave each of these books to a friend who went through them faster than I did. It's interesting to read stories that take place in a completely different setting (I live in Arizona) but you find out that people are people everywhere - some are good, some are bad; most are sometimes good and sometimes bad.

Best of Nesser
I have never read a Nesser book that wasn't completely absorbing, but this one tops all others. I find that I am reading it a bit slower because I don't want it to end. The plot is very interesting, but the attention to detail for each character, for the surroundings, for day to day life are never boring. I have read many authors who go into great detail over certain points and I always finding myself fast forwarding. Nesser has a gift that I for one am happy to have received.

Awesome Book
I am going to be careful here to not give away any of the plot. I really didn't quite know what to make of this book, or at least for the first 50-60% or so (btw it is 600 pp long), but then a plot shift helped to put things into motion again. The final solution of the mystery was a complete surprise to me (and to my wife) and although I didn't anticipate it, I am a bit ashamed that I wasn't at least open-minded instead of tunnel-visioned as were the detectives. Awesome book.

van Veeteren
Wonderful. Van Veeteren is getting older and is retired but he has one case that he didn't solve - The G File, The story goes back and lets us know the facts surrounding the G File... and then continues with the present where Van Veeteren gets pulled into the current situation involving the people in the crime in the G File.Kept me interested from the beginning to the very end

Nesser's characters are believable.
Nesser has the ability to draw you into his characters. Each are written with particular attention to their thoughts and actions that are congruent with their personalities. One looks forward to the light hearted banter and their particular thought processes. Wonderful

Great story and characters
It was a bit slow in the beginning but got better and could not put it down! The characters are changing a little as they grow older. I hope mr Nesser is already writing a new book.

601 pages long
This is supposed to be the last in the Chief Inspector Van Veeteren crime series (unfortunately) Hakan Nesser is the best, in my opinion, of Swedish crime writers. Fascinating plot and characterizations. Don't be put off by the length - a fascinating book.

Read the series!
I enjoyed the first van veteeren so much that I was delighted to find more. I have now read the entire series from start to finish and my pleasure did not diminish. Like when all good characters reach their closure you feel a sense of loss. I'll certainly read more by this author but not for a while, not until I recover my ability to let go of the characters that have dominated many weeks of my life and fast a new serf with equality. Try the first one and see, if like me, you to get hooked! Thanks Hakan, brilliant series.

RIP (probably) Van Veeteren
The infamous G file draws to a close and in all likelihood Van Veeteren, the elderly and enigmatic Chief Inspector. At first, for much of the book, we go into great detail of the 15 year old unsolved murder, the only one our master detective failed to crack. The pace picks up when it comes into view in the present and paints a picture of the characters involved and Van Veeteren,s musings. A gripping ending seals the story, with some sadness we,re unlikely to see the old fox in any more stories. Nice twists and lots of atmosphere.

A Real Twist in the Tail!
An interesting read that takes you into Van Veeteren childhood, an old crime and the solution 15 years later. I knew there would be an unexpected twist in the tale at the end but couldn't guess what it would be. I like the authors story telling style. I downgraded it to three stars 'cos in the end I thought the denouement was a little forced and fabricated. But never the less I've just bought two more van Veeteren books for my Kindle - that says something, doesn't it?

Crime with Charm
This is one of the best in the series and a perfect finale for this popular fictional detective. Like all the Van Veeteren books, the plot is intricately woven with the truth hidden in plain sight. In fact in this one I spotted how the murder was committed early on, but that did not detract from the enjoyment of the read, because this author always delivers so much more than an intriguing who dunnit.

Misleading.
The plot that is, great sleight of mind. Others probably worked it out but I didn't and of course that added to the expected fun. Van Veeteren is so well drawn it's hard not to become involved. Very enjoyable. I think I've read them all now and will have to wait till he publishes another.
