Q: Can this work as the sole heat source for day-old chicks? Or only as supplemental?

I don’t think so. Our heating plate wasn’t arriving until a few hours after we brought our day old chicks home so I ordered the heating pad to use in the meantime. We also had our heat turned up and they were chirping like crazy and not very happy. After we added the heating plate (made by rentacoop) they were much quieter. We still have the pad in by their food and water but they go under the plate to sleep and whenever they get cold. I don’t think it’s sufficient heat for such babies at least at first.

Q: Has anyone put this pad under a five gallon waterer to keep the water from freezing?

I have used it under a gallon sized water. It worked well. Have not tried a 5 gallon. It's base would probably be a lot wider than the heater.

Exactly the same. I purchased one the extreme weather kitty pad for our outdoor duck in the wintertime in his hutch. I purchased this one for peep for under one of the cat's beds.

Q: Why does it cause popping noises every 6 minutes at the plug in site? Is that normal?

That is not normal. Try plugging it in to a different outlet on a different circuit, like completely different area of the house and see if it happens. If it doesn't, its the strip or outlet you are plugging it into. If it does continue to pop then the unit must be faulty, at which point you contact the seller.
