Hilarious
Mel Gibson at his very best. The script is perfectly pitched, the cast are all on point, and gags just keep coming... A Hollywood film done right.

Childhood memories relived
When I was about 10 Maverick was my favourite of all the western TV series, and there were many. So, when I saw this I thought it would be fun to see it again and see if it still appealed. It is every bit as good as I remembered it. Forget that awful film version with Mel Gibson, it's not a patch on the TV series with James Garner at his laconic best. For those who have not seen it, think "Hustle", but in the wild west.Garner and Jack Kelly play gambling brothers, who are always scheming to make a fast buck. The stories might seem a little thin by today's standard, but they are played out with great charm and wit. I particularly liked the episode "Gun Shy" which was a spoof of another popular TV western of the time "Gun Smoke", and this was decades before Mel Brooks or "Airplane" stormed the cinema. Here's hoping they bring out further episodes on DVD. Roger Moore was in this series for a while as a gambling cousin and it would be nice to see an epsiode featuring him.

MAVERICK DVD (KEEPCASE EDITION!!)
This DVD is excellent quality, bars top and bottom, good picture, colour and Subtitles. Beautifully photographed by Vilmos Zsigmond on spectacular locations and sets, this is almost a great western. For me it falls just short of 5 stars because the "comedy" doesn't always work ( avery silly scene with our 3 heroes arguing in loud whispers as to what to do when they find 6 outlaws, and particularly with a gurning Mel Gibson. Can't help feeling that here he is very miscast). Relax though because the film benefits hugely from a wry, strong performence from Garner, and a funny sexy one from Foster (she really could do comedy), Coburn is his usual strong personality...and finally - a superb villain in our own Fred Molina. Also a plus for me was trying to recognise some of the "guests" in minor roles. Spot Leo Gordon, Danny Glover, Denver Pyle, Paul Brinegar, Geoffrey Lewis, Wm. Smith, Robert Fuller, Henry Darrow, Bert Remsen, and, so I am told , Margot Kidder!!! Sadly the great Graham Green and the entire "Indian" sequence is a failure and adds nothing except running time. Did I enjoy it?? Yes, mostly. The good, fun bits outweigh all my negatives. Not a classic, but with plenty to enjoy (and Foster is very good).
