You'd think that the Portal area trails would be better maintained, but there's only one FS guy that the volunteer trail crew never sees. It's totally up to them, and there's a lot of trails and a lot is really remote so hard to maintain. I would say none of it is worth bringing your mt. bike for, despite the designation on this map. There are still dead burned trees falling constantly from the 2011 fire and trails near streams are hard to follow because they keep getting flooded. The FS roads are basically jeep roads, more appropriate for a four-wheeler. None of the NF trails are marked like they are in the east and trails in the Wilderness area are definitely not marked. A lot of signs are missing too, so download the Avenza map or All Trails to keep track of where you are. That said, this is a beautiful area and we are glad we are here during April 2020 CV-19.
