Chocolate Me!

Educators recommended this book. I added it to my classroom library. I read it at the beginning of the school year. A sweet little boy asked me to read it day after day. I purchased another book and gave it to him as a gift. This book helps children see themselves in books.

My 1 year old son loves this book. Every night at bed time this is the only book he want me to read. I’m pretty sure he realized him and the boy in the book look similar. Great story on dealing with racism as a kid.

This book is great for teaching kids about self love. I highly recommend this book.

If you feel uncomfortable reading the words, stop and think about how little kids feel hearing them, or where it is that little white kids learn them.(Hint: it's not from this book). My four-year-old made me read this 4 times in a road. Recent reesearch shows that kids learn to see race (and make subsequent negative value judgments) starting VERY young (like 2-3 years old). http://www.newsweek.com/even-babies-discriminate-nurtureshock-excerpt-79233Books like Diggs' provide a very concrete way to explain that yes, there ARE different skin colors, that it is okay to point them out, but that it is NOT okay to see difference as bad. When grownups say "we're all equal", young children don't make the connection with racial discrimination. But when they read a book like this and see a little boy taught to love himself, and little white boys who make a bad choice (but then remain friends with Chocolate Me in the end), kids start to figure it out. This is a great book for having those conversations.

Bought this as a gift for my great-nephew. Had to read it first [you know, to make sure it was good...;)]. I thought the book was GREAT!! A book he will be able to read and relate to for years to come!!

I bought this book for my son and he instantly lit up. After reading it he said “ Mommy I love this book.” Seeing someone that looked like him made his day.

The book is wonderful for all children and a great representation of black children. For early ed and care settings, this is a great one to add to the library corner. Find books that represent all children of different races, ethnicities, family structures etc.

I liked everything about the book. Its about self-esteem. I purchased it for my great niece Rose for her Christening. Her very first book. (next to the bible of course). For now she can look at the pictures then she can grow into reading it. For now we will read to her. I've followed the authors successful career for many years. I love his work and now this book. Cute write, great read for kids.

Great book

I was excited to buy this book to expand upon my daughters understanding of racism but was really disappointed. The "chocolate me" pages don't really flow with the other text so it is a bit strange to read aloud.

Easy read, cute book for kids to boost their self-esteem, especially when they get teased at school for looking different compared to caucasian kids.
