The Death of King Arthur: The Immortal Legend

Compelling re telling of Arthurian legends.
A real pageturner from Ackroyd who has a style of writing which should appeal to all ages. Each tale is told in a modern style while keeping faith with the original legend.

Wonderful
Peter Ackroyd does a magnificent job in up-dating Mallory's 'La Mort D'Arthur'. So very easy to read and understand.Very enlightening.

Excellent version
An excellent modern translation by an author who has faithfully retained the spirit and poetic usage of Mallory's original work. Highly recommended

Great Story by one of my favourite authors
An immortal story of chivalry, treachery and death brought to new life for our times. The legend of King Arthur has retained its appeal and popularity through the ages: Mordred's treason, the knightly exploits of Tristan, Lancelot's fatally divided loyalties and his love for Guinevere, the quest for the Holy Grail. Now retold by Peter Ackroyd with his signature clarity, charm and relish for a good story, the result is not only one of the most readable accounts of the knights of the Round Table but also one of the most moving.

A fresh clear take on an epic tale
I tremendously enjoyed this book which I decided to read having enjoyed Ackroyd's History of England series. I can't comment on its likeness or faithfulness to the Mallory version but the original obviously dictates the structure of this book. There is real power and poetry in this version and the second book, the legend of Tristan and Isolde, and the last book were the three standout sections for me.

I just couldn't get into this
As a lover of fantasy and historical fiction, I had great hopes for this book, but I just couldn't get into it. I was hoping for a modern adaptation of the Arthur story - this is probably my own fault, if I'd read more about it I might well have found out that it wasn't, it's more of a 'translation' of Malory's Morte d'Arthur into modern English. I've never read Malory's original, but this one just didn't have the dynamism to capture my imagination or keep me reading. I had high hopes with an endorsement from Philip Pullman (who I also love), but for me this lacked the energy or entertainment value of either Pullman's best work, or the great historical fiction/fantasy of someone like David Gemmell. Gemmell's Arthurian stories (Ghost King and the Lost Sword of Power) were far more entertaining, engrossing and affecting, even if they took more liberties in the storytelling.

excellent modern classic
I've really enjoyed this. Now I confess that some other reviewers have much more knowledge of the original tales than I do but coming at this with just a layman's knowledge of Arthurian legend I have found it to be a fascinating read. The style is simply classic and conveys the feeling of its age without losing real readablity for a modern audience. As such, I think this is a book with genuinely broad appeal to a wide audience including younger readers with a passion for the era.

A fantastic read!
This is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the history of English as a language and of England as a nation. This edition tries to mimic old mediaeval books and has a beautiful binding and font that make it an enjoyable reading experience.
