Orff: Carmina Burana

The quest ends
I purchased three recordings of Carmina Burana before this one, and for one reason or another, was disappointed in all. One was so poorly produced that the soprano's voice reaching for the highest notes was painful to hear; the tempo of another was too fast for my taste; the third was waaaaay too slow and ponderous.Leave it to Robert Shaw to make me very happy. There's nothing I don't like about this recording.

Best version.
The depth and breadth of the direction, performances, and recording is tremendously enjoyable, and immerses the listener with sonic emotion, that will have you soaring and swooping. This is music that makes you KNOW that your ALIVE!

Great Translation Inside Jacket
This recording of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana that my complete expectations. To be honest, I brought it for their jacket insert with the lyrics which feature and impeccable translation into poetic English which was just what I was looking for.I also prefer the recording of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra to this Orchestra but I'm not going to allow that to detract from my review of the physical product that I received.

Very good, but live is always better.
I purchased this recording after recently attending a live performance for the first time. We were actually sitting on stage in the corner in front of the chorus and behind the percussion and pianos of the orchestra. Watching and listening to all the fireworks from that perpective of course makes any recording a letdown. Robert Shaw was a master choral conductor and I have most all of his choral recordings with the Atlanta Symphony. After reading other reviews, I purchased the Leonard Slatkin/St Louis Symphony recording of Carmina Burana. You hear more of the percussion in it which is more like what I heard on stage. I'm waiting to receive the surround sound DVD version. Hope it let's me get even closer to reliving that live performance.

Fantastic
I live in the Atlanta area and enjoy going to hear the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra play. My first experience was when they played the music from the "Lord of Rings" Trilogy. I had taken my grandson who at that time was only 8 years old and he enjoyed the music and also the screens they had set up so you could view the drawings the artist had done for the movies. That is why I chose this CD because I knew they would be able to play this music as it was suppose to be played.

Telarc Disc... The best there is
Music is a very personal thing, so I won't comment on the music. However, the performance and recording are first rate!

Carmina Burana a primal work of art
Robert Shaw continues to live through his work. This recording of a remarkable work re-created by Carl Off from the original beat monastic poets of the middle ages made contemporary WOW!!!!!! through the choral directorial magic of Robert Shaw. A great piece to wake up to when you are willing to wake up or even more perfect when the volume is turned to max potentially set to blow out your speakers to blow out your landlord and neighbors.
