Trumpet Descants: For 101 Noteworthy Hymns Spiral-bound – January 1, 2000

I took a risk buying this, but have been very pleased. It contains many common traditional hymns (I'm Episcopalian) with music for organ and melody plus two different descants for B-flat trumpet. The keys seemed to match our hymnal, and the organization was easy to use. It was spiral bound so I don't have to worry about the binding wearing out. I use it for general sight-reading practice as much as anything else.

I was very hopeful for these descants, but they weren't quite what I was hoping for. They're not bad, and I am glad to have them as part of my collection; they just aren't quite as good as the Douglas Smith descants from Hope Publishing. Smith's arrangements fit ideomatically very well for the trumpet.I read a few reviews complaining about the layout of the book and titling. I actually like how the name of the hymn tune is listed rather than a particular hymn title since one tune may have multiple different texts applied (and sometimes one text may use different tunes, such as Rock of Ages or All Hail the Power). A good hymn book will list the name of the tune, making it easy to match up.If you're a trumpet player who plays hymns in church (or a church music director who uses trumpet from time to time), this book is probably worth having, but make sure you check out the three volumes of trumpet descants Douglas Smith did for Hope Publishing!

Well set out. Has organ score and trumpet score. Also has various cross indexing. Each song has two descants for different level players and also suitable for both descants to be played at once.

Includes melody and 2 descents to accommodate differing ability levels. Good, well-written parts. A definite buy! A valuable resource for any trumpet player.

None of the titles of these "noteworthy" hymns match the traditional English names. Many are in a different language and many use an English word that has nothing to do with the traditional English name of the Hymn. I've also had to change many of the notes to be consistent with the chord being played by the piano.
