Tried the less expensive ones once, wish I hadn't. The cheap ones whistle when the furnace is running. It's pretty bad. Purchased the Air Bears and they don't make a sound. Worth the extra money.

They worked very very well. I prefer the paper ones as they seem to reduce the dust and hair much better. But with two dogs and a large house we have to change them every 3 to 4 months.. so the price adds up. But the quality is excellent and at least I’m not paying for something that doesn’t work.

We have been purchasing these quality furnace filters from AMAZON for many years.The size we purchase is 20 x 25 x 5, MERV 13.We change the filters usually 2 times per heating season, sometimes 3 times.They have foam strips both on top and bottom which results in a good snug fit; thus no air "slips" above or beneath the filter.They seem to really filter very small particles from the air.If you have asthma and a forced hot air furnace, this is one of the best filters you can find and its available in very many sizes.We buy three to save cost and always purchase the MERV 13.
