Fatima's Great Outdoors

I have read this book to my two sons for months as part of their bedtime story line-up. Such a beautiful, realistic, and warming story about the experiences of multi-cultural families and their adaptation to American traditions. Honest and beautiful illustrations. I definitely recommend.

A wonderful story. Perfect for read aloud and for talking about being in a family with working parents and being a transnational family with loved ones far away. The illustrations were lovely too.

I am so glad I found out about this book! I ordered it right away for my grandson. It's important to me to offer him beautiful children's literature featuring kids who look like him and children who look different.I really like that this book uses the vocabulary of the Indian American family in the story. We get to see how alike this family is to a "typical" American family as well as their unique differences. I enjoyed the perspective of Fatima in her reflections of visiting family in India.The struggles the family has setting up camp will be relatable for any one (like me) who didn't grow up camping.We enjoyed the illustrations, especially the spider and the night time camping page. I think my favorite is the page at the end with the Brown People Camping group picture.I've been thinking about how much I wish we had more family camping trips and vacations across our kids' childhood journeys. This book is encouragement to get out of the daily busyness of our lives and connect in nature. It's something I definitely want to facilitate and enjoy with our grandkids.I'm really looking forward to reading this with our grandkids and gifting it to the kids in our lives. I would love to see more books about Fatima's family so I hope that's in the works for the future. I think it's great for kids to read about and think about what it feels like to be different and to consider how we treat one another kindly and respectfully, welcoming learning about other cultures.

A generation back my family enjoyed camping as it was the only vacation they could afford. Fatima’s family feels familiar because of the similarities, but what makes the story truly special is the differences. My children ask to read this book frequently and (unfortunately…) request to go camping at its conclusion.

My 4 year old great niece loved it!!! Her mom says they've read it over 20 times - and ordered Indian food takeout a couple of times to try out some of the foods mentioned in the story. Yay!

📖Fatima has had a hard week at school and is ready for the weekend. Come to find out uncertainty lurks there as well. Her family has decided to go camping for the first time and she doesn’t know what to expect. From pitching a tent to starting their own campfire, Fatima and her family learn new skills and end up remembering a few of their own.📖 This story was a perfect combo of the main character analyzing the challenges before her and sweetly remembering her joys of the past. I love how the author and illustrator would place those comparisons side by side for the reader.📖 The outdoors is such a healing place, a necessity to balance out the stress and pressures of every day life. I’m so glad that the author was able to show that healing power in Fatima, I wanted to reach into the book and just hug that little girl!

Eine Familie fährt zum ersten Mal über das Wochenende campen und es wird ein tolles Erlebnis! Aus Sicht der jüngsten Tochter erfährt man alles über die großen und kleinen Abenteuer. Es ist ein super warmherziges und positives Buch, das sich toll eignet um Kindergartenkinder oder Grundschulkinder auf den ersten Camping-Trip vorzubereiten. Ich wünschte, es würde das Buch auch auf deutsch geben, damit ich es auch meiner anderen Hälfte der Familie schenken kann!
