Carol R. NobleGossamer Webs: The History and Techniques of Orenburg Lace Shawls

Well documented history and techniques of the Orenburg Region's Lace Making.
This is a great work on the history and techniques used in the Orenburg region. It is not a pattern book though it has the traditional lace components shown in it. If you wish to learn history and techniques here they are. If you want to learn to knit Orenburg Lace get Galina's DVD on Orenburg Knitting, if you want to process and spin your own fine Gossamer Thread, get her DVD on Spinning A Gossamer Thread. There is also a pattern guide available to help you create a triangle, square or rectangular scarf/shawl, prior knowledge of Orenburg Knitting(see DVD) a plus!

Great Adaptable Lace Patterns
Although I may never knit an Orenberg shawl, I have adapted the techniques and patterns in this book to knit other shawls and scarves for myself. Like Shetland lace, this lace is based on the garter stitch, thus supporting reversibility and avoiding lots of purling. The book contains background on the ladies who knit these shawls, and a description of the yarn spinning process using Russian supported handspindles. I've met and spoken to Galina, and her book reflects her care, friendliness, and commitment to quality.

Galina Rocks! The book is nothing like meeting her in person but unless you are really lucky you only meet her once or twice and you can read the book over and over and over.Lots of clear pictures, tons of great info, well written and inspirational. I'm not sure which I want more, to attend one of her classes, get her other book! or start knitting. Ideally I would do all three, but life is not that good.

Interesting
Good bit of Orenburg lace history. Don't look for a lot of patterns in this book. Learn some Techniques of Orenburg.

Better than I expected.
I knew this book would be good. I wasn’t expecting it to be this good though. I’ve only had a quick look so far, but there’s lots of lovely history behind the shawls and the people that made them, in the front section. Then it goes on to charts for the various patterns, and finally onto one (the only one) complete pattern for a shawl. The book doesn’t lead you through each shawl that you can make, but gives you charts for you to make your own.If you think you won’t be able to do such technical looking work that you see in pictures of these shawls, think again. If you can manage to knit, purl, yarn over, slip stitches and knit together, you too can knit one of these shawls. Yes, it takes a bit of mental work to start off with, but I reckon it’s well worth the effort.

Interesting reading
Well presented and interesting reading, but patterns are quite hard to follow. A work in progress if my eyesight holds .

Hatte mir mehr versprochen
Man erfährt sehr viel über die Technik und Geschichte der Strickerinnen. An Mustern hat es nicht viel. Ich würde das Buch nicht nochmal kaufen.
