Another Shaara Classic
When it comes to historical fiction, I place Jeffrey Shaara second to no one. That said, I must add, this is not Shaara's best work, but it is still a fabulous read for any lover of American history. Not only does Shaara successfully depict Americas "forgotten" war with accuracy and color that readers have come to expect from his work, but he also gives wonderful insight in one of our most underrated military leaders with his depiction of Gen. Winfield Scott, as well as a fabulous look at the earlier career of Robert E. Lee.The reader will also find glimpses of other future millitary greats in the formative stages of their careers such as Jackson and Beauregard. As with all Shaara novels, it is so well researched and presented, and so historically accurate, it is really a shame to have to classify this work as historical fiction.A must read for history lovers, and anyone wanting a good insight into the Mexican - American War.

Great Book
This was truly a great book, both from a historical point of view and a literary one. Sahara is truly a sensational military history writer and character writer. He always helps the reader truly understand the person he is writing about. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Excellent Reading
Many years ago I read Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and was so impressed with the unique style of writing and the story that he had to tell that I vividly remember the wonder that I felt when I completed that book, that journey Mr. Shaara led us along. Upon his passing I felt that I would never experience that particular type of journey again. When Jeff Shaara followed up his father’s work I had no great expectation of a continuation of his father’s unique style, but I must say that I was pleasantly surprised to see the mantle of authorship passed along so completely in tact that I was once again impressed when I read the sequel and all of the books that followed.I said all that just to say that this book is every bit as entertaining and impressive as any that preceded it. Great work Mr. Shaara and thanks for continuing your father’s passion and talent for passing along history cocooned within an amazing story. Well done!

Very well researched
I always enjoy detail provided by the author. I only knew the dates and places of this war before reading this book. The summaries of all the characters is a great conclusion.

It’s Content a Great Resource of the War
Author provided a great detail of historical facts woven into the books fictional events, thoughts, and personalities. I felt in some instance too much content added describing personal emotions and thoughts. Still over all excellent book.

Mexican War
Very captivating and mind boggling the persistence and perseverance of the American Army. Especially in a country dead against them in every respect

Great for those who have enjoyed Jeff Shaara's civil war novels
Dramatization of the US-Mexican War of 1847, focusing on Winfield Scott and (future Confederate General) Robert E Lee, but introducing many famous civil war officers as junior officers fresh out of Westpoint. good military storytelling as always from Jeff Shaara

Something to think about it
It's clear that Mexico's 1847 war was part of Manifest Destiny and this is the beginning of the tangible and intangible expansion of North America through land, economy, philosophy and way of life. The brand new elected president knows the last pretty well and maybe the so defended nationalism is the first step to make more evident the nature of Manifest Destiny in a much more updated manner

American History Brought to Life
Bringing history to life by setting historic characters in context can be difficult but it has been mastered by both Shaara's. Every student of the American Rebellion (sorry US friends buts being British ..) and Civil War should read the Shaara books. This one has the main characters form the Civil War all on the same side as they come under the command of Winfield Scott as he leads the invasion on Mexico. A Joint Maritime/Land manoeuvre that will be mimicked by McClellan in the Peninsula Campaign. The book brings to life each character and makes the reader eager to learn more about their early military lives; a study that helps significantly when trying to understand behaviours during the Civil War. This is a thoroughly enjoyable page turner that I read morning and night as I travelled to work on the train.
