Eat to Beat Depression and Anxiety: Nourish Your Way to Better Mental Health in Six Weeks

Basic Mental Health Nutritional Advice
The book has a few interesting tidbits and nice charts but nothing groundbreaking— the author likes fresh farm grown food which not everyone has access to — the author also loves kale and recommends mussels, oysters, liver and lots of seafood as brain happy food. Unfortunately not very realistic for most — recipes at the end of book are complicated (even the kale salads). No supplement/exercise advice and overall most information could easily be found online. If you’re a “beginner” to the world of anxiety treatment/coping it might be useful. Depression and anxiety are both extremely complicated involving genes, hormones (a big one), lifestyle and diet as well as things like thyroid function. A nice basic/starter book for those suffering from anxiety and depression.

It's just the Mediterranean diet
The book is really just an advertisement for the Mediterranean diet. I could have done without all the pandering - I bought the book; I don't need to be convinced to eat well. The biggest problem I had with the book is that it basically tells Vegans there's no hope for them unless they eat meat (and I'm not even Vegan). I'm also allergic to seafood, which this book pushes pretty hard. Dr. Ramsey says fish is integral and to figure it out. Thanks, but I'll pass on the potential of dying. So, really, save your money, follow the Mediterranean diet, call it a day.

In the movie Midnight Express, OOPS!; am I reviewing the wrong case of life saving?
No because for me, the movie had the same ending as Dr. Drew Ramsey’s new book, “Eat to Beat Depression and Anxiety." Briefly, in the movie, Billy has been arrested overseas, has lost his mind and is wasting away in a foreign prison. His college girlfriend visits him and tells him he has to save himself, leaves him with a “scrapbook” with hidden cash to escape (or fix his life) and after years of physical and mental torture the visit brings him to his senses. While watching this movie during COVID my husband turned to me and said, "that’s what you have to do." Sure, I thought, save myself, I can barely put a thought together. I was so sad, depressed, distracted, unhappy, you know the rest.A few weeks later I saw Dr. Ramsey’s e-course online, Eat to Beat Depression and started that. I then went on to buy Dr. Ramsey’s book. I like the way the book is set up and easy to read and actually use. It is a way of eating that is livable and doable. It gives you ideas that you can integrate into your food plan now, not next week when you go shopping, but today. There are new recipes to try and lifestyle changes that a real person is likely to sustain. You don’t have to do everything. Pick what works for you, some of it you know already but this book helps you to organize your food around all the stuff you need. I have had a total transformation. That other person is gone. I read everything from lists on the web to scientific journals but this book is what has changed my life. I got out of that prison, I made it past those guards, I am jumping for joy.

Improving my relationship to food!
Written well. Fun to read. Also, this book is very informative. It’s technical while not overdoing it. I made one recipe and it was so good - the pancakes. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn why eating healthy is good for your mental health and who maybe struggles with their relationship to food.

Great information on the mind-gut connection!
I’ve listened to so many podcasts about choosing foods and lifestyle habits to help combat anxiety and I’m fascinated by the mind-gut connection. My mom is a physician and recommended this book to me. I love that he breaks everything down into categories. There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment plan, and choosing your favorite foods within those categories is a great approach. I did like his recipes at the end although recipes like that tend to take ingredients that I don’t always have on hand and would need to plan for, but really appreciate all of the wonderful information in his book and will be recommending to friends.

Excellent book/great diagrams
I love this book! I am more likely to eat healthy if I know how it works in my body and how I can get the nutrient. As a clinician, I can easily explain how certain foods/nutrients help decrease depression and anxiety.

personal, science-based, and doable.
I have all of Drew Ramsey's books, and again, he does not disappoint. He shares some interesting studies about foods and depression, and he outlines an easy six-week plan for incorporating the findings into your diet. It's not full of weird ingredients, the food is real stuff you find at the grocery store, and most importantly, it all sounds good! I've already added more greens to my diet, and I'm working on adding the rest. The book is an enjoyable read as well, with the personal touch that I've come to expect from Dr. Ramsey. I'd buy it again.
