Thanks for the Memories!
Patrick McHale’s animated family dark fantasy miniseries Over the Garden Wall (2014) is an essential experience from Cartoon Network’s first mini-series. Perfect for its Fall and Halloween vibes, I revisit it each Autumn around October to feel Over the Garden Wall’s nostalgic warmth all over again.Patrick McHale writes with real heart and soul for the main storyline about brothers connecting while they are lost in unfamiliar woods. He writes with both a childlike wonder of random humor and a mature poetic deadpan sense of humor for Greg and Wirt alike. By the time you get to my favorite episode, “Into the Unknown,” Over the Garden Wall turns into a brave coming of age story for kids and teens to relate to and adults to look back fondly at their youthful adventures of teenage love. Over the Garden Wall really touches my soul in a profound way that I just cannot describe. Patrick McHale’s series is memorable, bestowing me with warm memories I shall cherish forever!Over the Garden Wall just throws you into a charming world of cute characters and fearsome visuals with an early Americana look to McHale’s animation. McHale went for an old timey feel that works wonders to feel strangely eerie immediately. The faded sepia tone to the background and borders juxtapose the really vivid colors of the foreground characters. The Blasting Company’s quaint throwback score is heavenly in their serene melodies and gentle rhythms.Nick Cross and Nate Cash’s art direction looks like the adorable animation for Regular Show, Adventure Time, or The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack with a moody twist. Everything looks smooth and hand drawn with a cute homemade feel to Over the Garden Wall. Nate Cash’s direction takes you from curious beginnings with dark mystery to an emotional ending all in just 10 quick episodes. Get the blu-ray to see all the episodes without commercials. Experiencing it this way is ideal as Over the Garden Wall functions more like a short animated indie film instead of a children's cartoon. I love it and I hope you do too!The voice actors are all legends and kill their performances, especially Elijah Wood. Elijah Wood voices the elder brother Wirt in his little red cap and Confederate outfit with his dour mood, fearful attitude, skeptical rationale, and awkward social skills with a precision and empathy not often heard in voice acting. You believe Wood understands that Wirt is just an unconfident young man, fawning after his dream girl he dare not ask out, thanks to Wood’s sincere and deft vocal skills. He delivers smart references and quirky pessimism with a natural presence.Likewise, Collin Dean is the optimistic, erratic, random younger brother Gregory. Dean’s hopeful, bright voice is perfectly innocent for the adolescent Greg’s fervent excitement at naming his frog, placing candy, or wandering off on his own. He embodies the vibrant spirit of a little boy eagerly going on an adventure with his older brother. They make for a nice pair of unlikely heroes as they basically just wander around aimlessly until horrors meet them.Melanie Lynskey is great as the stuffy bluebird Beatrice with her annoyed voice and impatient attitude. Her bad disposition is a fun juxtaposition to the quirky and quaint brothers. Christopher Lloyd is phenomenal as the terrified, creepy, endearing, and heartbreaking Woodsman in Over the Garden Wall. His voice bears a serious gravitas that even the boys must adhere to when he speaks.Jack Jones gives Greg’s numerously named frog a fun old school voice of wisdom and presence. All the singing is very cute and tastefully sung too. Samuel Ramey delivers a cold blooded, deep booming bass, vocal performance as the mysterious Beast much like Chris Isaak’s massive pumpkin being Enoch. John Cleese’s manic British voices are delirious fun as Quincy Endicott and Adelaide alike. I really adore Tim Curry’s odd, creepy voice for Auntie Whispers. They even got Shirley Jones to cameo voice Beatrice’s mother and Thomas Lennon to voice Jimmy Brown.I must mention that Emily Brundige’s voice as the pretty Goth girl Wirt likes named Sara is very cute. She gives Sara an instantly likable kindness, realism, warmth, and playfulness that is easily lovable.Over the Garden Wall yields many laughs for any child to enjoy, while their parents will be able to appreciate the deep narrative, emotional sequences, and more intelligent references. I think everyone should see Over the Garden Wall at least once. Perfect for families gathering together for Fall or Halloween. On the other hand, it would make for a delightfully devastating solo watch at night or a quiet afternoon. Over the Garden Wall is cutely dark, affectionately romantic, gently nostalgic, and shamelessly old school with a modern indie tone. Let the leaves fall and Over the Garden Wall play on its brilliant narrative and wondrous animation!

Great for a Spooktober/Fall tradition
My partner and I break out this series every October. We watch a ton of anime and contemporary western animation but this is one of the only shows we re-watch that just screams Americana. OTGW doesn't drag on too long and it doesn't hit you over the head with any messages; it has a sense of purpose and an idea of the story it wants to tell (and old timey cartoon aesthetics that it wants to indulge in) and it sticks to it. We also appreciate how it's spooky without being scary and suspenseful without being stressful. The Blu Ray itself is simple which is great - no built in internet crud or ads; it just plays the dang show. And that's a rock fact.

Will not play in PS3
I bought this for the holidays which made returning it beyond the window. Although the details said that the DVD would play in a Blu-ray device it absolutely does not. What a waste of money. I hope Amazon does a better job of policing the products they sell otherwise I will have to re-think future purchases.

Region B only
It seems this TV mini series only came out as Region B on blu ray. I can't find Region A anywhere. Maybe it's because this show is still available on Hulu in the USA? If you have a blu ray drive, you can use Leawo to play any region blu ray disc on your PC.The blu ray is still great with a number of special features. There are episode commentaries, behind over the garden wall, original pilot: Tome of the unknown, alternate title cards, deleted animatics, and composer's cut.

A PLAYING DVD disc
Received 8 days after i bought from amazon prime.Tried it right away because i read one of the reviews saying that it is not playing on a blue ray dvd player ...But lucky for me , it played quite fine on a SUNY BLUE RAY dvd player. Quality was good too.Now i was kinda thinking to get its companion blue ray disc , AVATAR , that was advertised with it . Hope that the avatar's price does not go on escalating !

An amazing mini series
You get only 10 episodes that are around 20 minutes each (plus special features) but the art style of the characters and all their surroundings I cant imagine anyone not appreciating and rewatching a hundred times over. Plus its funny... and unexpectedly dark a few times. Not that that's bad. Good voice acting and old timey music that fits the show. Definitely recommended!

Bluray worked somehow
Awesome series. I live in the U.S. so I thought the region-lock on the Blu-Ray would keep it from working, but it works on both the Xbox One and the BluRay player anyway somehow. Bought the DVD as backup, and will probably gift that to a friend. This story must be shared.

Perfect
When I first saw this on amazon I wasn't sure it was the real thing as rarely do American cartoons get a UK release (looking at you, Gravity Falls) and I was hesitant to be the first to buy it. Eventually I got fed up waiting for others to make reviews and went for it, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it is completely what it says - Over the Garden Wall on a Region 2 DVD!I don't know about the blu-ray, but the DVD only has 'play all', 'chapters', 'setup' and 'trailers', so no bonus or behind-the-scene stuff (a bit annoying because I know the American version has those things, including commentary and the pilot which I'd love to see), but I am grateful that I do, finally, get to own OTGW at least. If you're already a fan, go for it, if you're not, you're in for a spooky, nostalgic treat!

Great Little Show - Shame No DVD Extras
Just arrived and as I have already seen this show, I know I liked it anyway. I was just disappointed that their was no extras at all, not even commentaries or behind the scenes. Show is worth the watch though.

Just Watch This Series
This is easily one of the best animated series I've ever watched. The ten-episode series follows brothers, Wurt and Greg, as they make their way through a forest known as the Unknown, a place where a dark entity is lurking in the shadows.Everything about this show is brilliant. The art style is beautiful. There isn't anything over the top about it, it's simple and pretty and effective for it.The voice cast does an amazing job bringing the characters to life. You have big name stars like Elijah Wood, Christopher Lloyd, and John Cleese. But you also have newcomers like Collin Dean, who does a brilliant job voicing Greg. And the music. The music is astounding. The whole series has a 19th/early-20th century vibe to it, with the artwork and the character designs, but it shines through its music. It's haunting in places and really sets the tone right away.If ever there were a series I would recommend watching more, it would be this one. It tells a great, complete story in 10 episodes, that left me feeling both sated and wanting more. It's great.

This is easily one of the most interesting this to happen in ...
This is easily one of the most interesting this to happen in Western animation in a while. Something so dark and deep and interesting and being brave enough to be a miniseries.Every episode, all ten of them, are a brilliantly told and animated short story that in fact build to a magnificent whole.
