The Truce at Bakura (Star Wars)

Here is the story that takes place immediately right after Return of the Jedi!
So this is the story that takes place right after Return of the Jedi. Luke Leaves Endor to assist Wedge in a quick mission to retrieve information from an imperial probe droid that is spinning around in space. Apparently the prob droid was on it's way to the Death Star II, but since the Death Star II is destroyed at the end of Return of the Jedi, the probe droids message remains unanswered. Once the message is decoded by the Rebel Alliance it sends a message asking the Imperials for assistance of the planet of Bakura which is the location of an imperial outpost. Apparently the imperial on Bakura along with countless innocent civilians are being attacked by a new type of villain called the Ssi-ruuk who are capturing people. Apparently the Ssi-Ruuk can strip out someones consciousness and stick that person into a droid inorder to give that droid life. This way they wouldn't have to use troopers. Because a droid doesn't have to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom and have pain. The Ssi-Ruuk actually call this liberation and that living a life inside a droid without pain or hunger is good for all humanity. Luke, Han and Leia as well as the Imperials and Alliance think other wise. It is actually pretty creepy. Some people are actually placed inside computer consoles and not droids. Think of it like the movie Avatar but this time the person is painfully put inside a droid permanently and their human bodies are thrown out. Since the droids reprogram the people they no longer feel human and instead are basically ghosts trapped inside droids in order to give thee droids power and consciousness. The people trapped also loose their free will as they will be programed by the droids computer instead. The question now is will the Rebel alliance answer the distress call? or will they ignore it and potentially let the imperials and potential innocent civilians die and be subjected to this evil version of Avatar the movie.During the Truce of Bakura we see Luke still feeling the negative effects of the force lightening that emperor Palatine inflicted on him.. We also see that Han gets a gift by the Ewoks which is basically really sweet fruit wine. Han and Leia enjoy the sweet treat in the back of the cargo hold of the Falcon. We also see a potential love interest Between Luke and one of the Imperial Senators out on Bakura. However she does not care for the Jedi order and this leaves some conflict even though both seem to like each other. There is also a character named Dev who at first seems to be working for the Ssi-Ruuk. However he has been brain-washed in order to follow the Ssi-Ruuks commands. The only reason the Ssi-ruuk keep this human alive is due to his potential force powers. The Truce at Bakura is an overall fun story. It can get dull and boring at times. The villains are a bit silly, since they are basically Jurassic park raptors that can talk and shot with blasters. But over all it's a fun read. We get to see Luke, Wedge, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3pO back in other Star Wars Tale. If you are a big Star Wars fan and want to know all the stories that happened after Return of the Jedi, then this is the first book you should start reading.

Worthwhile, a worthy Episode 7
This was a very fun book to read, going through it I can picture the characters experiencing every moment and could easily see this as a movie. Episode 7 of the Legends sequal franchise! The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because there were just a few moments I would of liked to see that were passed up throughout the book. Otherwise a completely worthy read.

Certainly Serviceable
When this book came out more than 20 years ago I tried and failed to read it. It just didn't grab me. I finally started over and finished it. Glad I did. Entertaining and in the spirit of the original trilogy. What more do you need. Not the most compelling, sure, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Luke, Leia, Han & Chewie face a new, frightening enemy!
It has a good mix of political intrigue and action, as well as an inside look at Luke's insecurities, hopes, and fears about his future as a Jedi. The Ssi Ruuk are an intimidating new group of villains, but come across as a little one dimensional. Aside from that, it's a solid read if you enjoy EU stories.

Excellent Introduction to Star Wars EU!
This was my first Star Wars book I have read (in fact the first book i have read in years). I will start of with saying that this book renewed my interest in reading. I had a marathon Star Wars movie viewing day and I wanted to know the story after Return of the Jedi. Right from the beginning of The Truce at Bakura I did not put it down and read it in 3 days! It was a captivating tale that really portrayed the characters we know and love from the movies well. The author uses great detail to really give a sense of depth in her writing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone dying to know events directly after return of the Jedi like I did. Great read!

Good...but a little too neatly wrapped up for my taste.
First of all, let me start by saying that, although I have seen every Star Wars movie (in the theaters, no less) and consider myself a moderate fan, I am new to the Star Wars novels. I began reading because I've always been curious about "movies 7-9" (a.k.a. the movies Lucas isn't going to make -- please reconsider, George.) and "Truce at Bakura" seemed like a good place to start, being that it takes place a scant few hours after "Return of the Jedi" closes. That being said, "Bakura" ended a bit too neatly for my taste. The summary of the plot is basically that the victorious Rebels intercept an antiquated probe from the edge of the galaxy. The probe contains an urgent plea for help from the Emperor against a relentless enemy hopelessly outnumbering the fighting forces of the planet Bakura. Leia makes a quick decision to help the beleagured populace, hoping to win the world for the New Republic. Upon arrival, while Leia conducts truce negotiations with the stranded Imperial Forces there, Luke is discovered by a young Force-sensitive boy enslaved to the attacking enemy, who immediately crave possession of Luke's Jedi abilities for their own evil ends...Those are the good points, the bad point is that nothing further is left open for some very interesting and well-drawn new characters to do in further books. The ending is too neatly accomplished. Because of this, I only give an otherwise superbly written novel a moderate 3 stars. The upshot: Unless you, like me, absolutely must know what happens to Our Intrepid Band of Rebels right after RotJ, skip this one and go on to other books.

A solid read.
Hit or miss at a couple points, but definitely worth a read. I would've liked a little more time to develop characters like Manchisco, but ultimately it wasn't a deal breaker.

a well-written sci-fi novel
This is a reasonable novel, offering a fascinating story. It focuses on Luke, Leia and Han - as well as their comrades, such as R2-D2 and Lando - and takes place immediately following the events of 'Return of the Jedi' (literally the very next day). So if you're a fan of the original trilogy then this book may be to your liking. In terms of continuity, this is the first story of the Star Wars 'Extended Universe' ... which, since the purchase of Lucasfilm by Disney, has become known as 'Legends'. So what was once official canon has been discarded - and this book no longer fits within continuity (as established by 'The Force Awakens'). This ought not put off prospective readers, as the 'Legends' books are, on the whole, very good. And it's up to the reader to decide which "canon" they prefer. This book is well written, and presents a good characterisation of the main players (especially Luke). Yet it's a rather unusual story ... for, although closely tied-in to the original trilogy, there's no Darth Vader or the Emperor. The villains of this story are alien invaders from another galaxy. And, as such, the plot that ensues doesn't quite "feel" like a Star Wars story. This is more sci-fi than space opera. Nonetheless, it's still an enjoyable read.A second hand copy can be purchased for as little as 1p (plus postage). For that price, it's a bargain!

Disappointing
Stopped and started was slow,And got the impression the authour just read a list of characters without seeing the movies or knowing the personality of them e.g. han solo and his mannerisms ,remarks etc ,Very flat and slow and lot's of just talking amongst politicans that wasn't that insightful,Timothy zahn is much better and has the whole concept of action ,interaction down to a tee! OK
Positives include: Why the empire would not disappear straight after ROTJ, a temporary true against a common enemy, and aliens that suck the life force out of sentients to power their machines.
