The color of water
I read this book as i am part of a book club and it was a chosen book. I am normally not keen on reading biographies, especially when it is people who i am not aware of. I must say i found this book a very good read. I felt it was well written, informative and overal easy to read.I loved reading about 'James' mum and how determined she was -even though she was brought up in a strict Jewish world, she had the determination and her own mind to question this strong closed rank religion. Not being Jewish, but interested in religions and how they affect peoples lives, i found this book intriguing.I found James mum a real strong character and was determined and succedded that all her children become sucessful, even though she had 5 children and hostility from the outside world.I recommend this book, particularly if you are from of mixed religion, race origin.

Color of water review
I liked the story in this book however it is not the easiest to follow because the authors life story interchanges with his mothers life story every other chapter. i.e. one chapter is about his mothers life written in her words as if she wrote it, then the next his own life written in his words as if he wrote it, then the next his mothers and then his and so on... It got confusing for me after a while, and annoying when you were at a really interesting bit and had to wait a whole chapter before the story picked it up again.I bought this book based on the positives reviews, however as much as I have enjoyed it, and the writer has the gift for writing and describing things, I would definitely not describe it as a book that is hard to put down. In my opinion it is interesting but not riveting.

Discrimination.
This books details the lives of an immigrant Jewish family. The courage of the Jewish matriach to bring up 12 children of two black fathers and to succeed in raising quite exceptional children in spite of all the hardships and discrimination. .

absolutely stunning
This book was brought to me by a friend. I actually thought I’d read it, but realized I hadn’t . It was such a captivating, sad, crazy story of an indomitable woman breaking apart every conceivable obstacle life could throw before her. I’m in awe of the story, and of the gorgeous writing.

Ver good memoir
Partly fictionalized, but speaks clearly about racism. The author grew up as the black son of a black father who died around the time of his birth, and an Ashkenazi Jewish mother. When her young son asked her what was the "best" skin colour, she replied "the colour of water".Great characters, beautiful voices, and totally believable situations. Strongly recommended.
