Not all it claims to be...
This book is far from what it claims to be. On the front cover it reads "Recipes from New York's Most Talked-About Bakery", but I very much doubt these are the actual recipes from the bakery (which I have been to in person), in fact I can almost guarantee it. You don't even need to take a trip to New York to find out, just hop on over to the official website. The main page of this website states "soy-free". Take a deeper look into the "FAQ section" and you will find the query: "Do you use soy?" with the answer "We do not use soy". You will also find claims of the bakery being "gluten-free" and the question: "I'm on a gluten free diet, what can I eat?" with the reply: "Everything in the bakery is gluten free, so you can have everything without worrying about any form of gluten coming in contact with your sweets". You will then, hopefully, understand why I was surprised to find that the recipe book requires the use of "soya milk" and "dry soya milk" (good luck finding that easily in the UK), claiming that they are essential ingredients. There's also a requirement for spelt, which the author does admit in the opening pages of the book contains a form of gluten. As you can see, things just don't add up which may explain why people have problems making the recipes work. Couple that with hefty lists of (often) pretty expensive ingredients and you've got a book that really isn't worth it's money....maybe if you've got the time you'll be able to adapt the recipes to make them more user friendly, but then if you're essentially having to create your own recipes what was the point in buying the book in the first place?

Great baking book from a gluten-free guru
Filled with mouth watering recipes, however, the complexity of transforming everyday baking into a gluten free experience can be daunting - many of the ingredients are hard to source in Ireland.

Don't buy this - all the recipes I tried failed
These recipes never work and some of the ingredients are difficult to find or very expensive. The author uses a special flour mix that you can't get. I would bother with this recipe book. You're better googling for good vegan cake recipes.

With todays health problems with sugar this book is amazing. Gave a copy to friend who also loved it. What more can I say but fantastic.

Great cakes, if you can get the ingredients
The one thing that cannot be denyed about Babycakes is the pictures and design of the book are so cute and charming you will want to rush out and buy all the relative ingredients and produce your own beautiful cupcakes. Therein lies the problem. Now, I must confess, I am not wheat or lactose intolerant but I have friends who are and friends who are vegans, and being a vegan you could try to adapt the recipes slightly (how they will taste though I have no idea, the ones I adapted were awful but the recipes containing spelt were yummy) but if you have allergies, there are perhaps only several recipes that contain no wheat or gluten.I have hunted high and low in the shelves and aisles of many a well known supermarket and most of the ingredients are widely avaliable, from Xanthan Gum to Agave Necter, spelt flour and potato flour but I can't find Garbanzo fava bean flour anywhere! it is a shame because it makes the recipes in this book limited as to what you can make. However, I would never have discovered Agave Nectar without this book and it is very tasty indeed without the guilt of sugar.My advice is to look on the Babycakes website before you purchase the book, the author/owner goes into more detail about the ingredients that are used and why, the biggest factor being that the book is published in America and supplies are varied and plentyful, but with supply and demand it could be that will have some of the ingredients in our shops soon, what with store like Whole Foods and the wonderful internet.I do like this book tremendously and with the correct ingredients the cakes are amazing but it is the cooking equvalant of flat-pack furniture, if one part is missing, it all falls apart.

Le vere ricette di Babycakes
Vegan e gluten free. Svelati gli ingredienti che utilizza la bakery di NY(pazzesca e buonissima, un must per tutti quelli a cui piace la cucinavegan /gluten free o per chi vuole assaporare la "leggerezza" senzarinunciare al gusto e alla presentazione), sorge poi un dubbio,saranno veramente quelli e tutti? In Italia sono di difficile reperibilità ,o non si trovano, o dobbiamo trovare qualcosa di simile che però nonassicura la replica perfetta della ricetta.Resta comunque fonte di ispirazione e se ci si vuole impegnareacquistando e usando tutti gli ingredienti giusti, il risultato dovrebbeessere ottimo.

It's good not great
good selection of reciepes ingredients easy to find. Not all recipes have pictures, I like to see what final product looks like.This was Erin McKenna's first book her second book BabyCakes covers the classics is a better book in my opinion. If you can afford to buy both it is well worth it but if you can only get one I would go with the second book.

A good read
This book was delivered very soon after my order, thank you.I just love it, its such an interesting read. I have not cooked anything yet,with it being American, the ingredients are not readily available in a supermarket,they are in my health food shop.
