Most of the reviews here are more about the television series than about the books. I have yet to see the production, but was enthralled by the novels. Lisa strikes me as one of the most striking and compelling figures in fiction. A genuine original. From the claustrophobic world of a poor district of Naples to the larger scenarios that open up, the writing is very fine and the depth of investigation into location and character is absorbing. A great find.

Bought as a gift

A 'slow-cooker', not a hasty read. The 'friendship' between Lina, naturally talented but with less opportunities in life and Lena, a more submissive, less confident girl who is encouraged to study. Their friendship is like ocean waters, varying from calm and friendly to stormy, hitting rocks - always with an undertow of competition and jealousy. I saw myself more in Lena. Who will you identify with?

Bought as a gift, its great she cannot put them down.

Love the tv serialisation of these books and now look forward to reading them from the beginning.Excellent way to escape day to day life for a while.

The books are in perfect condition - apparently brand new - and arrived well packed and promptly. As for the content of the books, I can only go by the pedigree of their author. It will be some time before I'm able to offer a review of my own, but the author's reputation and the original reviews leave little room for argument. I look forward to reading all four in my own time and at my leisure. It could take me a year to read the entire set. That being so, I'm now changing my original 4 stars to 5. I don't anticipate being disappointed. bm.
