Her best performance indeed!
I ordered the book but I started the audible and I totally recommend it. Pure. Honest. Vulnerable and real.

Beautiful and Authentic!
Mariah's explanation of avoiding "time" is beautiful. It was never about being vein or not wanting to age, it is something much deeper than that. If you love Mariah, you already love this book. But even if you don't, it is a great look at her life and career and very well worth the read!

Mariah Strips Her Soul
“The Meaning of Mariah Carey” is a well written, humorous, telling story of Mariah’s life. Mariah discusses in detail her childhood, family members, adolescence, and how she was catapulted into the super star we all know and love today.Mariah really breaks down what it is like to be a biracial woman in America. She gives so much insight into what it was like to grow up in the 1970s and 1980s when biracial children were far and few in between. She tells sad stories of bullying, feeling inferior, and never belonging.“The Meaning of Mariah Carey” emphasizes Mariah’s songwriting ability. There are passages of her song lyrics throughout the book, which really highlight her impressive writing skills. So many only see Mariah as a singer, however the woman has written all her songs! “Hero,” “My All,” “Fantasy,” “We Belong Together,” all of the wonderful songs we’ve heard on the radio and those that were never released as singles were all written by Mariah.I highly suggest you read along with the audible as you get the full effect. Mariah sings along to her song lyrics and her hilarious personality shines through. The book comes alive. If you’re looking for any salacious stories about Eminem or the billionaire, James Packer, she was engaged to, they are not in here. Guess they weren’t meaningful enough to make the book? She does discuss Tommy Mottola, Derek Jeter, Luis Miguel, and Nick Cannon. Bryan Tanaka gets an honorable mention, however she does not go into detail about their relationship.Mariah’s “breakdown” is discussed in depth. It’s nothing like the media portrayed it to be. It’s nothing like it appeared.Throughout the book Mariah expresses the love she has for her lambs and how they have pulled her through the hardest times of her life. She genuinely loves us.She does not discuss her bipolar diagnosis, I’m guessing because it does not define who she is.She mentions the J Lo feud but never mentions her actual name because, well, she doesn’t know her.I’ve been a lamb since I was a child. I even stood by Mariah during the “Glitter” era and I can honestly say I thought I knew everything about her, however after reading this book I feel like I only knew part of her. Her family life is nothing like I thought it was. Her mother, brother, and sister are characters who will make you hold on tighter to your stable, loving, kind loved ones who want the best for you.Mariah really strips her soul in this memoir. I love her and understand her even more now. Brava!

Total rubbish..don't waste your $$$
Having known this singer and her mother for 15 years while Mariah was growing up and having shared a home with them I can tell you this book is nothing but rubbish and lies...Its all about poor little Mariah and how badly she says she was treated. Really??? She lived and grew up in a nice town on Long Island. She lived in a beach cottage where you walk down the driveway and you are literally at the beach!! How many of you have that? She went to a very good High School...the same one I graduated from. She does not even mention the REAL friends she grew up with...and so on...So many out and out lies/ fantasy??? Amazing how she continues to lie to her fans....Its all pretty sad and I feel badly for her mother the way she is slammed in this book. Ugh.

Mixed feelings....
I have loved this music icon ever since I was a little boy. She was my soundtrack during many troubled and anxious years at high school in England. I think being gay and the fact she is a gay icon explains some of my fascination with MC. She has (or had) one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. My no.1 favourite song by MC is Music Box (a song she has never performed live on stage, or at least there is no footage of it on Youtube). Back to the book...I was a bit disappointed that MC focused so much on her wealth. The luxuries she has is beyond acceptable in my opinion, especially when so much of the world's population is in poverty, but I guess she has worked so hard for her wealth. I wonder if she gives money to charity? The book focuses heavily on her dysfunctional family. Her brother seems to be a nightmare. Her sister seems very troubled and I felt a great deal of sympathy for her sister because I think deep down Alison loves Mariah and wants a relationship with her. Her mother Pat is a character and hasn't always been the most supportive or helpful lady throughout her career. Still, there is no doubt MC comes from a talented family. In fact I once saw a video of her sister Alison singing and she too has a lovely voice. Her father was the nicest of them all. He seemed to bring no trouble to MC or her siblings. He seemed like a sound and decent man. So maybe Mariah has more of his genes. Who knows. She also writes in great detail about her love for music and of course her turbulent relationship with Tommy. Overall I enjoyed the book, but I didn't get a very positive vibe from the book. I mean, her father's dying wish was for MC to make up with her sister Alison but I don't think that has happened. I appreciate her family have used her and damaged her but Alison is very vulnerable and probably needs constant support. It was nice MC said she would pray for her. So that's something at least. Worth reading if you love MC. Glad I read it as I have learnt a great deal about her life. I will love her for as long as I live. Her music lifts my soul. It's just a shame her book did not.

Beautiful experience
I got the book, but I knew I would get the audio too! I recommend both! The audio you get to hear her as she intended! No guessing! You’ll know what made her sad and what made her laugh! She laughs so much during the book that it’s so lovely to hear! She also cry’s and her voice breaks of sadness as you hear her tell you about her dark times. Honestly? It’s like a conversation with an old dear friend. You feel like you’re with her. It’s such a beautiful experience. Truly priceless. Just stunning💕

Memoirs of an imperfect angel
Up until now, Mariah's most sincere, vulnerable moment was "Looking in" on her second best-seller album "Daydream". As from today, there are more to be found in the 340+ pages of this fascinating memoir. Behind the caricature of the shallow diva she's mostly known as, a real person with insecurities and traumas is revealed. As much as interesting the stories behind her hits are, I am almost shocked to get to know in much more depth the 20 year old songbird that captivated me back in the summer of 1990. Another guaranteed smash hit, The Meaning of Mariah will surely become her unofficial 20th No. 1. Nothing bleak about it dahhling! 🧡

Beautiful, poignant, but most importantly human.
Mariah Carey is a symbol of female strength and resilience. She is a warrior, against racism, against sexism and abuse. Her iconic career and legacy today is a testament to her undying determination, strength, and hard work. This is a story about racism, sexism, male-dominated industries and abuse of power, female strength and resilience, determination, creativity, drive, and fighting for oneself and one's dreams against the odds. This is unique to all other autobiographies, in that Ms Carey has a beautiful, illustrative penchant for writing— something almost all “celebrities” do not have. This memoir is unlike any other "celebrity autobiography". It is a beautiful, poignant, illustrious piece of literary art, delving into the complexities of society and being human. Mariah Carey, being the greatest songwriter of all time, is by no surprise an excellent storyteller – she exhibits an effortless literary prowess. Her writing and literary artistry, are gorgeously and gloriously enchanting. Her words are lyrical, flowing effortlessly yet meticulously beautiful, smooth like butter, melodic, poignant, illustrious. It’s autobiographical non-fiction but written so picturesquely, savouring, deconstructing, and animating moments from the past. I laughed and cried whilst reading this book. I feel empowered. I am in awe of Ms Carey’s strength. I feel her power.Thank you, Mariah, for this incredible piece of literature and for sharing your talent with the world. This is an important and extraordinary memoir that everyone should read.
